14 Pear Recipes

Pears are a great way to make a common dish unique. Their buttery texture makes them a perfect candidate for sweet and savory dishes alike. They are also a great source of Potassium, Vitamin C and Fiber. As an added benefit, the natural sugars present in pears allow you to satisfy your sweet tooth while steering clear of processed sugar. Read "Tips for Buying and Storing Pears" for more information. Here are some of my favorite SparkRecipes that use pears.

We have an old tree in our yard with hundreds of pears. I was getting sick of them. Thanks for this article. Report
Not all raw pears are "buttery" textured - here in KS there is one called Keifer (sp?) that has a gritty texture. It seemed to be better when cooked down to pear butter or similar. Report
I don't usually use pears in baking/cooking, but I guess I should start! Report
Yum! I've always liked pears, but never ventured out from the typical green ones. I recently came upon a sale at my local grocer and picked one of each type they had on sale. I had 5 different pears- most were hits, a couple were misses, but I'm glad I tried the red one. It was just as delicious as the green ones I love so much. Report
A nicely ripened red pear eaten out of hand - that's the easiest pear 'recipe'! Except it can be hard to find them perfectly ripe...

I like to roast pears in the oven with some butter on them - sort of a caramelizing process. Not so healthy at the end, but better than a bowl of ice cream! :^)

I also have a pear/apple/cranberry crisp recipe that I used to make for a Thanksgiving dessert every year. But now my boys like pecan pie, so we make that instead. Report
My personal favorite pear recipe is an upside down pear cake with maple syrup recipe that I got from a Cooking Light magazine years ago. It is low-cal, melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

I am looking forward to trying the Pear Yogurt muffin recipe and have saved it to my SparkPeople cookbook.
