Food on the Run: Domino's Pizza

Today in our ongoing Food on the Run series we are going to look at smart strategies in food selection the next time you select Domino's Pizza

Our goal remains to recommend items around 250 calories and 10 grams of fat per serving or less. Some meal plans can easily allow for a higher calorie or fat intake but typically most require a total meal that is less than 500 calories and 20 grams of fat.

Cautions to Consider
  • There are nine core topping options for pizza selection with additional specialty ingredients available as well, which allows you to get what you want and avoid what you don't. Vegetables such as black olives, mushrooms, green peppers and onions are wonderful ways to get a serving of veggies while making your slice of pizza as filling as possible for the least amount of calories. Domino's has provided a wonderful Cal-O-Meter on their website as well to help you know the nutritional information before you order.
  • The type of crust you order does make a difference. Thin crust is your best choice and Deep Dish the worst and can provide you at least an 80 calorie difference per slice.
  • To keep your intake as low as possible, we recommend sharing a medium pizza and limiting your intake to one to two slices depending on what else you are planning to have with your meal.
  • If you are most interested in keeping your total fat intake as low as possible, be sure to limit your intake of toppings such as cheese, pepperoni, bacon, sausage, Philly meat, ham and beef. If you are trying to keep your sodium intake as low as possible, limit toppings such as black olives, sausage, ham, bacon, and anchovies.
  • The Bread bowl pasta is definitely a selection you will want to share with someone else or save half for another meal. According to the nutrition information provided on their website, each bread bowl serves two people and all provide over 600 calories per serving.
  • Pasta in a Dish is another high calorie choice that would be best to split if you select. Most options are over 600 calories per serving. Half a portion could make a good meal with Pasta Primavera being your best choice with a half serving providing 270 calories, 13.5 grams of fat, 385 mg of sodium, 29.5 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of protein. Adding vegetable choices such as onions, green peppers, mushrooms as well as roasted red pepper can provide wonderful flavor enhancements with little caloric impact.
  • Oven Baked Sandwiches are another selection that can be an ok choice if you are only eating half of the sandwich. Your best choice would be the Philly Cheese Steak with extra veggies, which provides 348 calories, 13.5 grams of fat, 1040 mg of sodium, 36.5 grams of carbohydrates, and 20.5 grams of protein for a half sandwich.
  • Plain bread sticks would be the best choice compared to Cheesy Bread or Cinna Stix. Each breadstick provides 110 calories, 6 grams of fat, 100 mg of sodium, 11 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein.
  • The Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad provides 245 calories, 6.5 grams of fat, 380 mg of sodium, 12 grams of carbohydrates and 11 grams of protein. The Light Italian Dressing is your best dressing choice providing 20 calories, 1 gram of fat, 780 mg of sodium, 2 grams of carbohydrates and 0 grams of protein per serving.

Fat – 9.5 grams
Sodium – 355 mg
Carbohydrates – 16 grams
Protein – 7 grams

Medium Thin Crust Hawaiian Feast Pizza with ham, pineapple and extra cheese – one slice serving size
Calories – 170
Fat – 9.5 grams
Sodium – 405 mg
Carbohydrates – 17 grams
Protein – 8 gram

Medium Thin Crust Philly Steak Feast Pizza with Philly meat, mushroom, green pepper, onion, provolone cheese and American cheese – one slice serving size
Calories – 180
Fat – 10.5 grams
Sodium – 375 mg
Carbohydrates – 13 grams
Protein – 9 grams

The Papa John 's near us got rid of their whole wheat crust. Apprently we were the only people ordering it. Pizza Hut's "The Natural" is yummy. We make pizza at home a lot now. I do like Domino's thin crust but agree...it is hard to limit to one slice! Report
I like Domino's but wouldn't order pizza from there or from any chain, a healthier pizza can be prepared at home and is a safer bet for anyone watching their weight. Report
Here you get a good discount at Domino's just now by handing in a Ciel water bottle cap (with the discount sticker on) when you make your purchase. I have quite a collection of them now and I don't eat Domino's Pizza (or know anyone who does). If anyone lives near or in Guadalajara and wants them all, just contact me! Report
Their sandwiches are actually really good, and what a difference between most all and the Philly Cheesesteak one, that will be my choice from now on! Thanks for sharing! Report
I almost always order the thin crust Hawaiin Feast from Dominos. It's my favorite, I love it! Report
for pizza, take out your serving and then immediately stick the rest in the freezer. you could still technically overeat, but it'd take more effort than leaving it out on the counter! Report
I appreciate this information - a lot. My hubby craves pizza about twice a month. This is a great "real world" application of incorporating healthier choices into daily life. As I am reatively new to SparkPeople, about 2 weeks, I thought this was a big help. Report

When I can order my own preferences (instead of bowing to the family's wishes LOL) I do the thin crust with ham, but order extra sauce and light cheese. Dominos has improved the taste of their pizza greatly in the past years. Report
I worked at Domino's while I was pregnant and had to eat their food everyday, as they provided no lunch break. No wonder I gained 45 pounds! Report
We do pizza about once every other month - not very often. I dunno - I've found that one REALLY GOOD slice (like a deep dish supreme or a nice big NY slice with pepperoni, onions, and olives) and a salad satisfies me. When I get the chain pizza, I can eat 3-4 slices and still feel unsatisfied. It's weird. Report
I love vegie pizza, or a garlic chicken pizza that some places offer. Generally though I tend to stay away from pizza places very often. I prefer salads. Report
My family LOVES Domino's. We probably order from there 2x/month. My hubby and I are both post-op gastric bypass, so eating the regular crust is just too filling for us, so we love the thin crust option. We get a medium pizza and split the toppings. We both love onions and green peppers. But on my half I get grilled chicken; on his half he usually gets sausage. I usually eat 3 slices; he usually eats 2. Prior to surgery, we prolly could have polished off a LARGE together!

For JIMACH, our Domino's slices the thin crust into squares, also. We figure that two squares is one slice.

During the summer, we order pizza from Domino's at least twice a month to feed family and friends for Saturday lunch. And, yes I eat only one piece. One piece can be a meal - it's very filling and satisfying. The taste is much better than store bought pizzas. For me it's all about the quality of my food - not volume. We typically top our pizza with chicken, green peppers and mushrooms... yummmmm! Report

Like others here, I love pizza and know that I wouldn't stop at one or two slices. So, I just don't order it.

My brother likes to say that pizza always comes in single serving sizes no matter what size you get. I finally managed to get it down to 3 servings per pizza, usually, but that still isn't good enough. The only way I'd get pizza now is by the slice. But given the fat and sodium counts, even then I wouldn't do it near a weight-in. @8~) Report
These 1 slice medium pizza servings are really misleading...

Who can eat just one slice of medium pizza and be full? It's better to get a Kashi frozen pizza and cook it at home. 3 slices have as many Calories as 2 slices of Dominos (or any other chain pizza) plus some fiber from the whole grain crust.
I do not get pizza that much but i do not like domino's just nasty pizza !!!

I very rarely eat take out pizza, but when I do, I order a thin crust and try to limit myself to just 2 slices.

I prefer to make my own pizza at home, using pita bread as the crust. That way I can control the toppings, and the pita bread makes a very good crust. Report
When I order corporate pizza (instead of from our local SUPER vegan friendly place, Pizza Luce) I go Papa John's. Their red sauce and whole wheat crust are vegan and I load my pie up with tons and tons of veggies (and obviously no cheese) with extra sauce. Really delish and not bad pricewise. The Luce has more vegan options (mock duck! homemade cashew/tofu based "cheese"!) but can be a bit pricey.

Mmmm, Evelyn. Your idea for homemade pizza sounds great. I'll have to see if I can find a vegan English Muffin and do a veggie "pizza" that way sometime. :) Report
I enjoy my toasted, high-fiber English muffins too much to crave my old pizza haunts . . . and it's been three years since I've binged on pizza-parlor style pizza. I top each muffin half with a spoon of spaghetti/marinara sauce, red onion, red pepper, mushroom, black olive, and slivered water chestnuts with a small garnish (oinch) of sharp cheddar and parmesan cheeses, and sprinkle of basil, oregano, and garlic and broil until heated through. Yum! Just add you own favorite veggies. And, for the meat lovers, a little thinly sliced meat can go a long way to making a very appealing and satisfying meal, while keeping the calorie count relatively low. I'm so glad we live in a time when making healthier choices seems to be getting easier. -- Evelyn Report
The thin crust pizza is completely unfilling. You are better off getting original crust and having a couple slices than going hungry on thin crust or eating your fill of what is mostly high calorie cheese and toppings. Report
If I'm going out for pizza, I will usually just get what I want. We don't eat out very often and every once in a while won't hurt...as long as you aren't making a habit of it!! Report
How would you determine one slice with a Domino's thin pizza ? - our Domino's around here cuts their pizzas into square pieces.... Just curious! Report
Y'know, I just can't tempt fate by trying to limit myself to 1-2 slices or 1/2 sandwich. I just don't go to those places (or order from them). It's awesome that Dominoe's has a calorie calculator doo-hickey, but for the money & temptation, I'll just make my own w/ a pre-made crust & some cooked chicken, light feta, veggies... Oh my, I'm getting hungry! ;-) Report
A serving of veggies? From adding a veggie topping to your pizza? And only eating one or two slices? That's a pretty far stretch. Report

I don't do "corporate pizza," because it's all so inferior in quality to the mom & pops. We don't get pizza often enough for it to be a problem, thankfully.

My favorite is called "The Breath Mint" at one of the local places... it's basically a white pizza with lots of garlic! :D Report
At these places you're better off skipping the crust entirely and building a salad from pizza (or sandwich) ingredients:

peppers, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes for the veggies
chicken breast for the meat
oil and vinegar on the side with salt and pepper.

Skip the pickled things and processed meats like ham and pepperoni - they're loaded with sodium. Report
The most important aspects of a great pizza pie, the crust and the sauce, Domino's has neither. The crust is not crisp enough and the sauce is too sweet. They are in such a hurry to get the pie out the door it is usually under cooked. Then they think they are doing you a fav by steaming it in the bag while in transit (if you ordered it delivered) making for one sweet soggy mess. I tried Dominos 20 years ago and will never go back. We usually get a large hand tossed with ham and pepperoni. But lately I've been leaving off the pepperoni and can manage 2 slices depending on what else I had that day. I do like the thin crust as well, so we'll have to start doing that one more often.

I would like to see a review on Papa John's and Pizza Hut as well. Maybe Hungry Howie's, since that one is nearby to me also. Report
Good aarticle I use to order a medium domino pizza and eat the whole thing. Now I order a pizza with mushrooms, green peppers and onions. I eat 2 pieces and freeze the other 6. this way I have pizza once a week and satisfies my need for pizza. Report

I love pizza and could probably live off the stuff! But, I've made a change to what I order. I used to get the supreme on hand tossed crust, now I order my pizza on thin crust with ham and mushrooms. It still satisfies my crave for pizza without all the added calories. Report
I love pizza is there an which allow you to eat more slices that don't drive your sodium through the roof. Report

Could you check out Papa John's Pizza?
I feel like Dominos is too greasy as it always leaves an oil mark on the bottom of the box but Papa John's does not do that and does not seem greasy to me. I love pizza and try to make homemade preferably. Report
Pizza, most defintely, is my absolute favorite food. MOST times I have a "veggie" pizza and sometimes I'll go for the pepperoni. I also ask for "extra sauce, easy cheese" not so much b/c of the calories/fat grams, but my personal preference.
