The 10 Healthiest Foods You've Never Tried

I recently saw a list of the 10 Healthiest Foods You've Never Tried. I pride myself on being an adventurous (mostly vegetarian) eater. When I saw the list, I was excited to see how many I'd eaten.

How many have you eaten?

I've eaten all 10. Numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 are regulars in my household.
Here's the list and a quick tip for eating each food!
1. Kiwi (just scoop it straight from the skin!)
2. Broccoli rabe (sauté with olive oil, garlic and lemon)
3. Brazil nuts (munch on a couple)
4. Edamame (steam in the pod and sprinkle with salt)
5. Red lentils (cook lentils, then substitute them for chickpeas in hummus)
6. Quinoa (use instead of brown rice)
7. Canned salmon (throw on salads or in pasta sauces)
8. Prawns (shrimp) (stir fry with vegetables and serve with brown rice)
9. Whole grain and multigrain pastas (swap these for all your white pasta)
10. Pomegranate (toss the seeds on salads or mix them with yogurt)

I'm not sure I have had broccoli rabe, but I have had all the rest, and like most of them. However, except for shrimp, most are too high carb for the way I eat now. Report

Shrimp? Really? My doc told me to stay away from shrimp, very high in cholesterol. I love shrimp. :( Report

Never tried? Really nothing more exciting than a kiwi? You would have to have had a REALLY pedestrian diet to have never eaten any of these. Report

Never tried - really? These are fairly common foods you can get any where now. I've had all but 7 & 8 because I'm a vegetarian. Report

I eat them all. Except 5 but maybe it's in soups I've eaten. #7 I don't think I've had since i was a kid. I remember the tiny bones. #10 grows where I live. I'd never buy one if it wasn't free from someone's tree. Time šonsuming to eat. Report

I would leave out 4 and 9. Don't eat soy beans and wheat gives me problems. Report

I've eaten every item on the list, even the canned salmon (but it's been ages). My only beef w/ red lentils is higher carbs/lower fiber than its traditional green cousin. Report
oh, yeah, I have tried growing soybeans (edamame), snowpeas, peas, and beans but the wildlife like them too well along with most of the vegetables I can't grow in pots. My grape tomatoes and broccoli are grown in pots right in front of the house along with some of my herbs so I can get to harvest some myself. Report
I've had all of them. I'm not fond of kiwi and I prefer broccoli raw (some of it off of my own plants) or stir fried. Raw broccoli, cauliflower and carrots are all good snack foods along with grape tomatoes picked off of my plants whenthey are in season. Report
I've tried all except Prawns (as I keep kosher, and they are not).
I tend to eat a lot of them. Report
Woo hoo! I have eaten all but 2 and 5. I'd love to try Broccoli Rabe, but it is not available in my area. I will have to try Red Lentils, as I lentils overall. Report
I've eaten almost all of them. I read that the kiwi skin is edible and is a good source of fiber, so now I eat the whole thing, after cutting off the ends which tend to be tough. Report
The writer of the list probably doesn't have much variety in his/her diet. Report
Not sure about Brazil nuts, unless they are in canned mix. I live in a Great Lakes state, USA. So, we call prawns shrimp. Edamame is grown in a field less than a mile from my house. My mom cooked brown lentils. None of these foods are unusual. Report
I've eaten all of those foods, some of them starting when I was child. I don't understand why they would be listed as foods people have never tried. And I live on a disabilities income! One of my former boyfriend's family were shocked when I brought a fruit platter to a family gathering--they had never tried half the fruits, at least. I remember it included honeydew melon and star fruit. Also, I brought an Acorn squash to Thanksgiving at his sister's house. No one touched it! They did not eat squash. It takes all kinds. Glad you have tried all these wonderful, delicious foods. Report
We stay away from any soy in my house, but I've tried them al on this list.... Oh, don't think I've tried broccoli rabe. What is it anyhow? Maybe a blog on what it is is necessary! Report

Someone was asking about broccoli rabe-- imagine taking all the bitter (admittedly healthful) tastes from broccoli and doubling them. I tried some frozen in soup and really did not find them pleasant. If you like really strong, pungent green tasting vegetables, you will probably like it. I do but broccoli rabe is too much for me. Report
I haven't tried all of them (I've tried 1, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10), but I can't exactly eat anything of those except for brazil nuts, quinoa and maybe canned salmon and I don't dare trying brazil nuts out and broccoli rabe isn't something you can get around here as far as I know. Report
Eaten them all, 8 and 10 I'm allergic to now. Some of the rest taste bad or my family hates them. Don't waste money on Kale, watercress has more nutrients, by the way. Kale farmers hired an AD agency to promote their stuff . My family despises kale... Report
I have tried all of them. And, despite how healthy they are touted to be 2, 4, & 9 do not support my body's health. So, I do not eat them. Report
Never tried broccoli rabe, I'm not sure how that differs from regular broccoli. Not sure if I've had red lentils, I know I've had the brown ones. 1, 4, 6, 7 are all things I keep stocked at home. Report
I rarely eat lentils, but lots of quinoa. I prefer my broccoli just steamed instead of broccoli rabe. But 8 1/2 out of 10 isn't bad. I get 1/2 for lots of broccoli. Report
I've eaten them all as well however not sure if my lentils were red or not. I normally eat them in soups and salads! Great list! We need to have more of them as I am a vegetable eater! Thank you, Sparkfriend for this list! We can always relearn how to eat foods we don't like and/or not accustomed to! Report
These are all staples of my diet, except broccoli rabe. I'll take collards or arugula or spinach or lambsquarters over broccoli rabe any day. Report
I won't try Prawns - they are not kosher, so I never ate anything like that knowingly for basically all my life. But then, later, I figured out that I am actually allergic to crustaceans anyway, when I was trying out some "kosher krab" sushi and similar foods. The edamame (soy) is also very tasty but I end up with soy allergies (seems worse with other soy by-products like TVP or soy proteins, soy isolate etc etc.). So I don't feel bad that I only eat 8 of the 10 and really more like 7 on a regular basis (I have had the broccoli rabe in restaurants a lot but it's rarely available at my local grocery store. So I don't go making a special trip across town to go buy the stuff.). Report
I've eaten them all except broccoli rabe. I have, however, cooked broccoli that never formed a head as you would broccoli rabe, and it tasted great. I'm not very fond of whole grain pasta, though (although I don't like the refined stuff either). I prefer to use spaghetti squash, or put zucchini or root vegetables through a spiralizer. I'm not very fond of shrimp, though. Report
I've tried them all, but I'm not a huge fan of canned salmon--I'd rather just cook it fresh. But I haven't made a lentil hummus before; I guess I know what I'm making next! Report
Have always loved canned salmon - make them into salmon cakes all the time. Kiwi is yummy too Report
I've tried 8 of them...I'm a vegetarian that doesn't eat fish. So, I've eaten all of the ones within my dietary restrictions. They're all yummy too! :) Report
Agreed. Most of these aren't uncommon. And a few are quite expensive. Careful with canned salmon. The redder the salmon, the higher the fat content....good fat, but more fat. Report
I don't believe many people have tried kale. I love it and I do believe it is pretty healthy for you. Most of my family thinks that it is bitter, but I don't. I love it raw or cooked and just tried it for the first time a few months ago, because I hear that it was good for you. Report
Tried them all and allergic to all except the broccoli rabe. Red lentils cause vomiting within a 1/2 hour after eating. Report
I've tried 7 of them. I have heard of broccoli rabe but really have no idea what it is.
As far as I know I haven't had red lentils or quinoa.
Been there, done that! :-) Haven't eaten canned salmon in decades, though. Much prefer fresh, wild caught in texture and flavor. Report

Well, at least 5 were regulars in our house when I was growing up in the '60's . I'm disappointed in the somewhat smug, patronizing tone of the author. Seriously, these foods aren't uncommon. We do 8 out of 10 fairly regularly. Can't stand prawns though.
I am not sure what is broccoli rabe and have not eaten any lentils, my DH won't eat it so I've never cooked them. Must buy quinoa. Report
