Back in July 2008, the closest thing I got to exercise was a lot of "transportation" walking - I lived downtown and walked most places - and the odd bike ride. I had been gaining weight, and wasn't too happy about that, and I'd tried a bit to be more active and be more careful about what I was eating but nothing stuck.

Then I randomly came across SparkPeople one day while looking for a recipe.

In the late summer of 2008, I started tracking my food intake, while taking steps towards becoming more active. I started by doing the strength exercises, getting my bike out a bit more, and playing Dance Dance Revolution. Then that fall I did a Pilates class and joined a team playing dodgeball with people my now fiance played Ultimate Frisbee with (yes, there are adult recreational dodgeball leagues ;). Both of those added more transportation walking as well ;) I signed up for an introduction to weight training class and learned how to use gym machines. In winter 2009, I did another session of dodgeball, and started taking belly dance classes. I then decided that I wanted to play Ultimate Frisbee in the summer, and that if I was going to do that I should work on running, which is always something I've avoided as much as possible. I started slowly making my way through the C25k program in February, indoors at first. I say slowly because I didn't finish that until June - I had a lot going on! I did a 4 week beginner clinic for Ultimate which taught me a lot, and then I played Ultimate once a week all summer and went to a practice or two per week as well. I did a 5k race in June, and then another one in September. This fall I'm back into belly dance and I'm now working on the "One Hour Runner" program and am contemplating trying a 10k race in the Spring.

I haven't been tracking for a while, and am more into maintenance mode. I wouldn't mind going down a few more pounds but I'm happy with how far I've come :) I've moved away from downtown and I'm not doing as much transportation walking, but I'm trying to keep my activity up!

Hey!! Thank you so much for your reply to my question! You provided some really great info!! I am actually running the Ottawa Race weekend 5k. Of course I am doing it for fun since it's my first, but I am a person for whom numbers matter (and help me progress), so my time is a little important to me!! This year you pick the corral when you register. Right now I am in the 30-35, but I think that I will change it so that I can start at the back of the 25-30 corral. No matter what, I'll be running my first 5k, and that's what matters!!

Thank you so much for suggesting the somersault website. It looks awesome, and I will definitely join some of those races!! I was looking to do a couple more 5ks this summer and a 10k by the end of it, so it's great to know there are lots of events going on!!

Thank you for the smoothies ideas. I also like the idea of freezing banana bits, why hadn't I thought of that before! Sounds yummy.

I really enjoyed your comment about the BMI ranges and the goals people set for themselves.

Thanks for your response to my post regarding quick cooking vs. steel cut oats. You have reiterated what I thought, but I wanted some feedback from the SparkPeople community. I don't use instant. I'll probably keep using the quick cooking.
