    I think the way the nutrition and fitness trackers work is that you enter your goal and the time frame you want to meet it - you also enter your activity level and other questions and the site will calculate a range of calories to eat and suggest the number of calories to burn to meet your goal. I'm not sure what the exact formula is but it does recommend a lot more calories than most programs do as far as food. At first this seemed strange to me and I thought I would never lose weight that way but then I realized this is not a DIET, it's a program to make permanent lifestyle changes - when I started to 'get it,' I realized that even tho I might be able to exist on fewer calories and it might show up on the scale faster, it's not a healthy eating pattern I can keep up forever. I didn't used to understand how important that concept is but now it makes the most sense.

    I want to tell you a little about SparkPeople. To me, it is a little bit like a emoticon with built-in structure and support - it's lots of fun and easy to make friends because we're all in this together. I like the way a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is emphasized - it's about waaaaaay more than 'just' losing weight so you have definitely come to the right place if you're ready for a change!


    There are tutorial videos under the HELP section that can show you how to use the features of the site.


    If you haven't discovered The Spark book and/or the SparkDiet linked at the bottom of the START page, check them out - the program is simple but extremely effective. There is a TON of information on this site - so much it might even seem overwhelming but fortunately we don't have to 'digest' everything at once!


    Take a few baby steps and then a few more and before you know it, you'll have completed a long journey - I hope you enjoy this community as much as I do - it teaches us how to make positive lifetime changes because that's the only thing that will work over time!
