Shedding Pounds & Health Problems One Small Step at a Time
UPDATE 2014... I fell off the wagon for a very long time. Now i'm back trying again...
Back in March 2009, I finally gave in and stopped procrastinating about going to see my doctor. I knew something was wrong and had been for a very long time. I ended up with three specialists plus my family Doc. I was diagnosed with an array of health problems – Hypertension Stage 4, sleep apnea, gall stones, and prediabetes. All on top of problems I already had – Fibromyalgia, depression, adult ADHD, inner ear issues.
The main thing I heard from each of these doctors as they handed me the diagnoses was - Lose the weight and most of these problems will disappear; don't lose the weight and in a year things will get worse. For a while, at every appointment, they made sure to remind me that I am "Morbidly Obese".
Now, as I type this to update my page, when I go to my appointments, even though I am still morbidly obese, I hear things like ‘how are you doing it’ and ‘it rare to have a patient turn things around like this’. The blood pressure meds I was put on in March have even been cut in half already and it’s only July, as I write this.
In the past I’ve dieted or started an exercise program, but I’ve never been able to stick with it. Ya, I might have lost five pounds here or there but I would get frustrated and give up gaining it back two fold. I think my last 40 pounds was put on that way. At this point I don’t think I could handle failing again, and making things even worse for myself.
In turn, I found Sparks and learned a few things by just surfing around the site…. With what I learned, I decided not to diet. I don’t want the stress of dieting. Instead I started making really small changes in my lifestyle, just one or two at a time so I wouldn’t overwhelm myself. First I quit smoking but didn’t allow myself junk food to compensate; only veggies and fruit… mainly the ones some people call negative calorie foods. Then I stopped drinking Mt. Dew – I had a 52 oz cup I filled every day (sometimes twice) with fountain Mt. Dew along with the cans I would drink at home. Then I cut out fast food, except Subway. Next it was portion control …. Ok that’s a lie, I told myself it was portion control, but instead it was pile on the veggies to get full, instead of the other crap I was eating. Still, I’ve noticed by doing this I have cut back the amounts that I eat slowly, because every once in a while I still pile my plate full not thinking and then I can’t eat it all. Once I could breathe a little better, I started walking. Ya there has been a few other little changes, but those are the major ones and I think they are working since I started this on March 15th 2009 it’s been exactly 4 months, as of this update and I’ve lost 40.2 pounds.
Now I’m changing up some of my goals and entering the next phase of my changes… I’m still have lots of changes to make but it’s time to lift the restraints just a tad and see if the small changes I’ve tried to ingrain in myself over the past four months stick….. If they don’t I will clamp the restraints back down!

My Goals:
Eat healthy and workout a minimum of 3 times a week.
My Program:
I have vowed to change things one small piece at a time instead of throwing myself head first into several major changes or into a crash diet that would set me up to fail like they have in teh past.
Check out my goals above to see what I am currently trying to change. When I feel I have succeeded in one and replace it on the list I'll post it in my blog.
