I have struggled with my weight starting around age 10. I worked hard through my 20s to get fit and feel good. On my wedding day and for the first few years of my marriage, I was the happiest and healthiest than I've ever been. I was eating right and regularly going to the gym. In 2001, I had my first child and gained 65 pounds with that pregnancy. The weight came off fairly easily thanks to exercise and nursing, but when I found myself pregnant again in 2002, not prepared for that at all, I started gaining weight again. Sadly, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage and I went on to have two more miscarriages after that, gaining more weight with each one. (I was pregnant five times in five years!) After the birth of my youngest child in 2004, I had ballooned up to 202 pounds. I am only 5'1" and wear a size 6 shoe, so it's a lot for me to carry around. I have tried unsucessfully to get all of the extra weight off, and I have been continually frustrated. After receiving an email invitation from MyPoints, I joined Sparkpeople in September 2007. I was a member for nearly a year before I really started using it to my benefit. In June of 2008, I got serious and lost 10 pounds my first month, mostly thanks to the nutrition and exercise tracking tools. I pretty much stagnated with the weight loss after that, although I was definitely healthier and had more energy than before. I began co-leading a weekly "Thin Within" Bible Study group at my church a few years ago. We also worked through the "Made to Crave" study. Both studies are similar. I recognized the reasons why I eat when I shouldn't, I identified my strongholds, and am TRULY making God #1 priority in my life. Another WONDERFUL book addressing the root cause of weight gain is "Faith and Fat Loss" by Ron Williams. I highly recommend it. He also has a website to help with success beyond the tools in his book. I've tried so many different eating and exercise plans throughout the years, but what has really been working for me is Paleo and clean eating. I also joined a gym. I vary my cardio workouts, I interval train and strength train. It's been a LONG process, but I refuse to give up! If you struggle as much as I do to get and stay at a healthy weight, I recommend to keep trying different things until you find what works for you. Just because someone likes something and it worked great for them does not mean it is right for you. I also recommend viewing your eating plan as a lifestyle change and not a DIET. In my experience, maintaining can be even more challenging than actually dropping the weight. You have to find something you can live with for the rest of your life. I recommend something healthy and not a fad or pills. I believe in the healing power of natural foods, and in an amazing and loving God.

To release 30 more pounds (I've dropped 31 this year.)

To be able to get my wedding ring off so I can properly clean it! (I haven't been able to take it off for 15 years.)

After I reach my goal weight, we are getting a puppy!


My Program:
Paleo. I am also daily tracking my exercise, drinking 8-10 glasses of water and choosing my foods wisely. And I take daily vitamins.

I have been married for 19 wonderful years. I have two girls, ages 16 and 12. I also work as a Children's Librarian. We live in North Carolina.

    It does sound like you are eating enough - it could just be you need to add some Cardio. I applaud you for not giving up! 4 months and 2 lbs is frustrating.

    I was advised to go up to 1600 but I do a lot of cardio and very little strength training. My entire focus was on losing the weight as opposed to firming up. I actually had to go up to 1800+ calories just to start losing weight again.

    The Fitness Tracker is really good but I have had to start finding my calories in other activities and I use the Activity Calculator at http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.

    It can take a bit of looking to find your activity but then all you have to do is manually enter it into your Fitness Tracker at Spark. I put as much info as I can so I won't have to look it all up again. ie: wash dishes, 32 calories in 15 minutes. Then if I am at it longer I can just adjust it. BTW, I found it under cleaning.

    I tend to underestimate the time factor but it all adds up and matters when trying to lose weight.

    Welcome to By The Numbers! Introduce yourself and make yourself at home! It really is a great team and we have several "collective challenges" running so no one feels left out. Everyone is able to contribute.

    We have a chart that runs in Excel that you might be interested in having. It was made by the founder of the team and I use it daily to make sure I am still on track to either lose or maintain. I would need your email address to send it since it has to go as an attachment.

    I'll let you know how the catfish comes out. I buy the catfish nuggets as they are a lot cheaper but still mighty tasty.

    Can you tell me what setting you used on the range please? Did you cover the pan?

    Frying catfish is always on high and tends to be deep fried, not covered. I am really looking for a healthier alternative. I like the Zatarain's Fish Coating that I get in a very large jar at Sam's Club. Are you making your own coating mix from cornmeal itself?

    Interval Training is supposed to be awesome but no, I don't. Are you calculating your calorie deficit? It could very well be that you aren't eating enough food for the calories you are burning. I hit a plateau last October and since then I calculate my deficit daily. I have done really well using it and the lower I get the more accurate I find I need to be in evaluating my calories burned. I am now down to the last 4.5 pounds! It really is so exciting! I had never ever been thin and now I am!

    I am visiting you to ask a question - but first a suggestion after reading your comment.

    Try walking. 30+ minutes of brisk walking twice a day will jump-start your metabolism.

    I now do a brisk walk 100 minutes every morning and average 5+ miles with a walking buddy and do 20 minutes of casual walking at night with my DH and walk about 1/2 mile (he has to walk slowly). Brisk and a full mile at night will work best for you and at least 2 in the morning. I don't know why, but it does work.

    My question is on a recent recipe you cooked - Cornmeal-Crusted Cajun Catfish Recipe.

    Could you explain to me what is meant by "spray the pan with cooking oil?"

    Are you using Pam or something similar or a light coating of oil? Nothing so far has replaced Fried Catfish for us and I am still trying.
