I did a search online and found some interesting versions of the liver and onions - not the way my mom fixed it or that I have cooked it...
(will have to copy and paste, SP won't let me add the HTML code...)
Although... someone commenting claimed that it was not actually the way Luby's fixed it, so who knows. Luby's left the area about 18-20 years ago. They might still be in business in Texas where they originated from.

Last time I visited in Pasadena, CA there was a place called "Beadles Cafeteria", wasn't too far from one of the senior housing, and they had really yummy liver and onions (or maybe I'm not too picky!). But I'm not really familiar with other areas of Calif, and it's been 20 years since I was last in the San Diego area, and closer to 30 years since I was last in the SF area (my uncle lives in LIVERmore, across the bay from SF, hahaha, just realized the name - I should ask him if there are good places to get liver and onions, but he'll probably tell me he doesn't like grandma did NOT know how to cook liver! My mom could make it well enough.).

I wish there were more places Julia to get liver and onions. My family won't let me make it.

Funny! I love liver and onions - but my family doesn't. I've not even made any for myself in years. I used to go to some of the cafeterias to get it but most of those type places are long gone.
