56 and out of shape, after 10 years of non activity, eating and drinking like a sloth, I finally reached my breaking point. Went to the gym and walked on the treadmill for 20 minutes (Xmas 2010, weight was 286 lbs.). Eureka, my achilles tendon injury from 10 years ago is no longer giving me any trouble. If my joints hold out, perhaps I will one day be able to run again, lol.

Update (March 6, 2011), jogged slowly for 1.75 miles today at the local high school track. Body seems to be holding up (barely). Will continue to push ahead but can't get too excited and jump ahead or injury will occur.

Update (March 17, 2011), jogging 2 miles a day, 5 times a week. Left knee a little sore, but seems to rebound by the next morning. As long as it doesn't get any worse, I'll keep pushing ahead gradually.

Update (March 27, 2011), jogging 2.5 miles a day, 5 times a week. Right achilles tendon a little tight and tender but seems to improve after a good nights sleep. Left knee seems to be better, but now right knee is slightly sore. Seems like I'm pushing my joints and tendons about as much as they can take.

Update (April 15, 2011), jogging 3 miles a day, 5 times a week. Right achilles tendon still tight and tender but is not getting any worse. Left knee is having no problems any more :) Weight is down to 245.4 and jogging speed is almost up to 5MPH.

Update (May 16, 2011), jogging over 4 miles a day, 5 times a week now. Feeling the strain on a few joints but no problems so far. Bolder Boulder is 2 weeks away. Weight was 236.8 this morning.

Update (June 11, 2011), Bolder Boulder was fun, time was just under 77 minutes, so I was pleased. Weather was perfect, will return next year and break 60 minutes :)

My Goals:
Determined to get in shape to ski again by Nov. 2011.

Starting weight 286, height 6' 6". Goal weight around 220, not exactly sure, will have to see what I look/feel like when I get there.

pushing for a 10K on Memorial Day, the "Bolder Boulder" in Colorado.


My Program:
Started on the treadmill (20 minutes walk) around Xmas of 2010. After a few days, I started to mix in a very small amount of slow jogging every few minutes while watching the heart rate monitor to avoid over doing it. Increased slowly and after 4 months, graduated to jogging over 3 miles/day at least 5 times per week :)

Added weight lifting as of March 5, 2011.

56 years old, out of shape, but not for long :)

Lived in PA, OH, and currently in Houston, TX since Nov. 1979.
