    Chickens are pretty hardy. They've lived in below zero temperatures and have survived in cold drafty barns since before my time and long before electricity.

    Yes there are brooder/heat lamps that provide heat to chickens. Some experts say to use them and other say not to. If they get use to a heat lamp and we lose electricity (which we often do in the winter (for 1-2 weeks at a time) then they will all perish.

    That was my big dilemma ~ should I or shouldn't I?

    We decided to cover their pen with tarps to stop any drafts and give them extra food so they would have more body fat. I make a suet out of bacon fat and peanut butter then add lots of seeds, oats, veggies and fruits. They love it!

    Thank you for sending warmth. Can't wait for winter to pass and spring to be here!
