HERCKLE
Our 13-year-old Hercky made it through surgery today (exploratory, removal of spleen, neutering, biopsy of liver, check for tumors in kidneys and prostate). Won't know if the spleen (which was suspicious for cancer) was actually cancerous for a week. The good news is that the layers of tissue in the surrounding areas did not appear to be cancerous. (Though we were told the kidneys appeared irregular and suspicious, we opted not to have them biopsied as the vet warned that can lead to uncontrolled bleeding. )
For now, I can relax and be very thankful that Hercky is alive. I was so scared, and I am just thrilled he is doing okay. (He IS an old boy.) . Biopsies won't be available for another week yet. It's been a very hard day and I am totally wiped. We have nasty weather and were told NOT to come in tonight (but we've talked with them a couple times so far this afternoon and evening), but wait til tomorrow.
Rather than drop him off the night before (as advised by the vet), we chose to let them place the pain patch on him and bring him home to sleep in my bed as usual. He did really well, and it helped all of us that he was there. (Course I cried all night, worrying.)
Then, today, I asked (as resolutely as I could) that I wanted to stay with him til they took him into surgery. (Had to be there at 8 a.m., but surgery wouldn't occur til noonish.) I brought his quilt and pillow and told them I would sit on the floor, in a kennel with him, whatever, I just didn't want him to be anxious and alone before surgery. Although my hubby initially thought I would drive the staff crazy with such a request, I went through with it. And in the end, we both stayed with him. (They let us sit in the waiting room, with Hercky on his quilt--and just took him away for the various tests and meds they needed to take care of periodically.) It worked out beautifully, and I was really glad I was there to keep him calm.
My hubby and I will be flying to Salt Lake City, Utah area in 2 weeks for a job interview, as a real estate development company interested in him has provided plane tickets for both of us and a hotel room and car for 3 days. (They want the 'wifey' to be happy with the area and available housing, I am told.) So I am hoping all is well with Hercky, as the absence from him will be tough on me---despite the wonderful (and much-needed) opportunity.
Thanks for the lovely notes here. I will be getting back to normalcy here soon. I promise! 5170 days ago
