January 2011 was a big wake-up call for me. I wasn't diagnosed with any weight-related disease... I wasn't somehow embarrassed or ridiculed for my weight... I was just finally aware and fed up with where I had let laziness take me and my health. Oddly enough I am a very healthy obese person! I don't have high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, heart problems, breathing problems (beyond heavy breathing when working out), or anything else! I'm just overweight and, sadly, less active than I want to be (and should be)!

As of July 31 I have been 425 days away from Spark and I don't think it's a shock that I can tell a difference! I went from losing 25 pounds in about two months to being up 4 pounds above my January 2011 start weight. I'm a little sad... a little disappointed... a little ashamed... and a lot motivated!

My Goals:
My main goal is to lose weight so that I can be healthier and more active. I used to play four sports in high school and would be ecstatic to make it to half of the activity that I had then.


My Program:
I've been working for the last two months to set up a program that incorporates 10 small goals that can be reached and easily maintained.

1. Drink more water each day (8-12 glasses). DOING!
2. Drink diet soda instead of regular soda (or no soda at all). DOING!
3. Eat less "breakfast meat" (i.e. bacon, sausage) DOING!
4. Eat no more than 2 100-calorie pack snacks in a day.
5. Plan meals for at least 3 days per week.
6. Walk 5 minutes for each hour sitting/watching TV.
7. Have one day per week with 35+ minutes of aerobic steps.
8. Have 10+ minutes of aerobic steps each day.
9. Increase daily goal 5% every other week until 10,000 steps per day is reached.
10. Keep a complete list of food eaten each day and keep calories at or below 2000 per day.



Personal Information:
I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. I spent four years in Jefferson City, Tennessee for college and another five years in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for graduate school. I teach math at a couple of local colleges now.
