I joined SparkPeople at the end of July 2010 and since then I have lost more than 60 lbs (as of 3/24/2012). That keeps me motivated to move forward.

12/31/2010 - I guess I should probably fill in this part a bit. That 2 sentences really doesn't sum up my struggles.

I have had a weight problem for most of my life.


When I look back at my pictures as a kid. I really wasn't all that heavy. I think I would have grown out of it eventually had I felt better about myself.

I let it get out of control once I got married. I got up to about 220 then when I got pregnant with our first child I went up to 240. After giving birth to a beautiful baby boy I started working harder to lose weight. It was a roller coaster of up and down. I would get to a point where I was pretty happy with who I was then get lax about exercise and eating and I would go back up. I never really went back above 200 until this last couple of years. I still exercised regularly but my eating wasn't under control.

I went to the doctor for a routine yearly checkup and got on the scale (sigh...I hate that part of dr's appts). I was crushed when I saw 220 on the display. I asked my dr. to help me with getting started. She gave me a 3 month prescription for an appetite suppressant and referred me to a nutritionist. I almost didn't go to the nutritionist but I had told myself that this had to stop once and for all so I went. She talked to me about my eating habits and told me about a website called sparkpeople.com. I sat quietly and listened thinking "I have at least 5 apps on my ipod touch that do that same thing" but I was resolved to give it a try. If she thinks its a good idea I should at least check it out. She had created an account for me.

When I got home and logged in I was hooked. I have told her that my goal is to change my eating habits and make a lifestyle change. I took the appetite suppressants for about a month and then stopped. I wanted to learn to eat the right way and not rely on a crutch. It had done what I wanted and helped me get started but it wasn't the way to go and I knew that.

I've lost almost 35 lbs and still remain strong in my resolve to continue.

Normally once I would lose a good amount of weight I would get comfortable and slowly let it drift away but sparkpeople has helped to provide me with the support and direction I need to keep going. I'm confident that I am making changes in my eating habits that will last a lifetime. I've known for years that a lifestyle change is in order.

My grandmother passed away in June of 2010. I was very close to her and it was not entirely expected. I thought I would have her for many years to come. I miss her a lot
She had type 2 diabetes and maculor degeneration. I take after her and I decided to do something positive after her passing and take care of myself to try and avoid some of the health problems that were headed my way.

I'm so happy. I go to the store and smell the fried chicken and instead of walking over to the deli to order fried cheesesticks or jalapeno poppers I can either wait or get a cheesestick or something healthy to tide me over.

I had lost interest in shopping for clothes or accessories because I felt like nothing looked good on me so what did it matter. I've regained my desire to shop for clothes and accessories! I didn't realize I missed it so.

I've even agreed to run a 1/2 marathon with my sister in law. I'm excited to train for it and run it. It's a great goal to help me start 2011 out on the right foot!

I'm so thankful for spark people! I've communicated with so many inspiring people. I can't wait to see what 2011 will bring!

This is kind of rambling but sometime soon I'll go back and try to smooth it out.

My Goals:
My initial goal is to get down to 150 lbs. I think once I achieve this goal I'll go for another 15 lbs but I'm going to start with baby steps.
There is a history of diabetes in my family and I am hoping that weight loss and exercise will help me to keep this from occurring.
I also want to show my kids how to eat and exercise right.


My Program:
I'm teaching myself smarter eating habits and changing my lifestyle so that once I get to my goal weight I won't start creeping back up. I exercise 4 - 6 times a week. I'm currently training for a 1/2 marathon so there is a lot of running involved. I mix that up with elliptical trainer, kettle bells, roller blading, and Zumba and Dancing (for Wii). That ought to keep my body guessing.

    Thank you for taking the time to read and leave a message on my blog. I found it a hard blog to write as it rather laid me bare!! However I felt that, indeed I hoped that my honesty might help to rekindle the Spark in some and give hope to others!!
    The reaction to the blog has been overwhelming.
    Why overwhelming you might ask? Because I don’t believe that I am doing anything out of the ordinary!! I hope that the over-all message that you took away from that blog is one of hope – that if I can do it – you can do it too!!
