I hate to just "delete" all this history, so I am just going to update here, and keep my previous posts below.
I am here almost exactly ten years after I started here on Spark, with many of the same challenges and goals. In short, I want to find sustainable health and balance. I still juggle several jobs, and though my cervical cancer is now in check, I continue to have heart and lung issues, and have recently discovered a lump in my breast.

My mother just died of lung cancer. As her primary caregiver, I watched her struggle to do even the simplest things. She was unwell for most of her later years, and had terrible eating and exercise habits that I no longer wish to replicate.

I am in grief, and very alone in the world right now, and hope to find comfort and support in the community I have here.

So I am back...

Written when I started in July, 2007:
I used to be in shape. I used to be able to eat anything, and stay slim. Then I turned 30 (a number of years ago now), and my metabolism just seemed to stop. All my favorite clothes still hang in my closet, and I am working to get back into them again!

I work several jobs, all of which I love, but this schedule leaves little time for myself. I always put other priorities and people before my own health and fitness. I am ready to make the changes needed to become a healthy, happy me!

Update 11/21/07:
This was today's Healthy Reflections message, and I thought it was such a good guiding philosophy that I wanted to put it right here on my Spark Page:
Are you creating your own life?

Take a moment to look at the circumstances of your world. Is it what you want to see? What could you do differently to take one step closer to your ideal vision? We're all dealt different hands in life. That's how things are. To change things, you have to first accept that fact, then figure out where to go from here. We should all be able to count on each other for help, but in the end, we can't expect anyone to change our lives except ourselves. Nor should we want it that way. It's natural to feel powerless and give up in the face of hardships. But complaining and blaming do nothing except prevent action. Without positive action, you're giving up your power and asking for more of the same--a world you did not create. Where you start may not be your fault, but the course you run is still your choosing.

Update 9/9/08:
I am starting over today - as though I just discovered Spark, all over again. I am hoping to catch that infectious enthusiasm and momentum that I had when I first started, over a year ago. In the past year, I have lost and gained almost 100 pounds. I'm ready to take it off and keep it off, for my health and happiness.

There's a great plaque I saw once from the British Kennel Club. It said, "Honorable scars from fair wear and tear shall not count against." I love that saying. Let's all remember that when we fall off the wagon...

My Goals:
I want to feel confident about my body again, both in how it looks and how it can perform. I have dealt with more than my share of major medical challenges in my life, and know that my health - along with the support of my Spark friends - is the most important thing I have going for me!

My Program:
I'm starting over again, almost ten years after I found Spark the first time. I am nervous, but know that baby steps will help get me there. So, I am working on one day at a time.

I live and work in the arts in Kailua Kona, Hawaii.

My Inspirational Quotes (for this journey):

“There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.”

“Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your own estimate.”

“We can’t become what we need by remaining what we are.”

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

"Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels."

"Finish each day
And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and
Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can."

"The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them."

- George Bernard Shaw, playwright
