I am a female in her 70s who is on a mission to live a healthier more active life. I retired from full-time professional work in 2015, but continued to work part-time to keep my mind active. I lost more than 30 pounds between 2011 and 2017, and and as of December 2018 I am about 12-15 pounds from my long-term goal.

I love to walk (especially outdoors), dance, cook, read, attend live theater and concerts, listen to classical and Latin music, work in my gardens, and travel. I hated gym class when I was in high school, but as a senior citizen I have come to love to exercise.

My Goals:
My weight at end of December 2016 was 142. My ultimate weight goal is 121 pounds. I also want to lower my A1C to less than 7.0 and maintain normal blood pressure with less medication.

(updated December 2018). Weight goal remains the same: 121 lbs. My non-weight goal is to be able to walk, dance, garden, and travel with joy until I am taken from this earth.

My Program:
For 2017: Walk 3-5 miles at least once per week; do Zumba for an hour once a week; participate in senior fitness classes that include stretching and strength training 2-3 times/week (increase the weight lifted every 4-6 weeks); do cardio or strength training videos when classes don't meet. In the spring I will look for an affordable yoga class in a pleasant environment. Goal summary for Jan. - April: at least 4 60-min. sessions with cardio, flexibility, and strength training. Starting May 1, I will up this to 5 hours per week.

It was refreshing to read Coach Nichole's article about her own exercise program. I noticed that because she gets bored with rigid routines, she has fixed goals, but is flexible in how she addresses those goals. I am trying to emulate this.

Personal Information:
My all time highest weight was 187 pounds (BMI = 36.5) in the late 1990s. Shortly thereafter, I joined Weight Watchers and lost more than 20 pounds in about 15 months; I kept that weight off for more than a decade. But at less than 5 feet tall, I was still obese. I joined SPARKPeople in December 2011 weighing 166. By that point I suffered from diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, I had suffered a stroke, and needed a pacemaker and a knee replacement. Weight came off very slowly. In 2012 I got a pacemaker implanted and in 2014 I had a knee replacement. Then I told myself "No more excuses." After my post-surgical therapy, I joined WW again and started walking regularly with a friend. To challenge ourselves we eventually walked in a 5K race, and then another, and another. In 2016 in addition to a couple of 5K races, I walked an 8K, and a 10K. Not bad for age 73!

Other Information:
Updated December 2018 at age 75: It's been a difficult year, with major renovations to my house, a failed septic system, a car that died, and my sister hospitalized twice (the first with a life-threatening double pneumonia and the second with a serious compound fracture that resulted in 10 weeks in a wheel chair). My exercise routine had occasional setbacks, my food intake wasn't always optimal, and I stopped visiting Sparkpeople. But I survived construction projects, vehicle problems, and family illness.

I am grateful for my beautiful and functional remodeled bathroom and kitchen, my garden's harvest, my exercise buddies, and the opportunities to travel with friends in MI and on my own to the Czech Republic and Germany. I am reaffirming my commitment to maintain a healthy life-style in 2019, and to find joy and peace in whatever I do.
