The Right Motivation
Updated June 2020: After reaching 351.4 in mid 2019, I lost about 10 pounds by November before my doctor urged me to join Weight Watchers. I'd done it before. Several times. Once with success. Other times, not so much. I know that you get out of it what you put into it. It's not going to work if you don't stick to the plan. My secret this time is that I found the right motivation. In mid 2019, my husband was diagnosed with Mutliple Myeloma, a type of blood cancer. There is no cure. A year previous, my dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and passed in early 2019. I know the two are not equal, but I also know what cancer does to you. I watched the cancer change my dad from a do it yourselfer to someone who couldn't even shower without assistance. I knew I needed to get it better shape in order to be physically able to take care of my husband down the road when he needs it. So I had the motivation, and I slowly started losing, but only 10 pounds in 5 months. In November of 2019, I realized I had another motivation: My husband has never seen me at a normal weight. I've been overweight or obese since I was 10 years old. I want to reach my goal while my husband is alive to see me to do. That puts a little pressure on me because I don't know how much time he has left. I love SparkPeople. I've been a member for over a decade, under one account or another. But simply counting calories doesn't work for me. Adding the tools of Weight Watchers to the motivation of my husband's illness has given me what I need to succeed. I've now lost over 50 pounds in the past 11 months. I have about 150 to go. It's not an easy road to take, but I am gaining confidence in my ability to reach my destination. Or at least get further along the journey than I ever have before. I'm short. My ideal weight is probably around 100 to 120. I'm a realist. I'll never be super skinny. My overall goal is 150, but that's flexible. I'm going to see how I look and how I feel as I lose and adjust my goal as I get closer. For now, I've set a bunch of smaller goals to reach. I just barely missed my goal for today - to be under 300. I'm right at 300 instead of under 300, but that's okay. I set this goal 6 months ago and I have come so close that I am proud of me. I set a goal for December - another 25 pounds, and then a goal for next June - another 25 on top of that. If I reach goals early, I will adjust. If I reach goals late, I will adjust. I've also set a series of 5% goals, with no date in mind. Just "reward celebration" stops along the way.
