My new ride. Strange looking with the lefty "fork," but light and agile.

I get a lot of cycling time commuting most days and hitting the trails after work and on the weekends and my gym is just across the street from work. I'm in my 50's, my spouse and I are empty nesters, and I just "retired" from club team sports soccer and volleyball. So far, so good - good health, good fitness. Now I'm transitioning from those higher impact sports to lower impact sports, like cycling and tennis - and the ever more necessary yoga. Started mountain biking last year and love it. Have two trail-riddled parks, each only a mile from my house and I haven't run out of new trails yet. I've met up with other friends and groups that have helped with technique and opened up new trails.

I've been racing a full suspension bike with all of the gears (3x9).

Not sure what you meant by direct drive, do you mean single speed, just one gear in the front and back? If so, I haven't delved into that yet although I am seriously contemplating building up one shortly. Here is a link to an article on the basics of converting to single speeds: http://mountain.bike198.com/single-speed-m

As for racing I highly recommend it and the bike you have is perfect for it. Remember to relax, ride your own race and most of all, have fun!

Yeah, Iron Grate is the run that starts back behind the ball field off Beechwood. My loop is to hit that, then turn left at the bottom to climb back up and do a couple more sections, if I can get them in. You ride with PORC? I thought they had a Wed. weekly group ride through Frick.

Thanks for the blog comment, yeah, I periodically get some saddle time in at Frick, but lately it's more road/MUP miles. You ride Iron Grate? I love that park!

Cool. Hope the Cannondale's a good fit. I ride with a women's mtb group in the summer and have found that riding in a group is very beneficial- you get good info on how to tackle technical obstacles, feedback on your riding style/ bike/ gear (which can get annoying, depending on who you're with), and just a fun time networking with people while doing what you love. Yay!

    Ride on!!!
