I'm Cindy and I live in Pfafftown, North Carolina. I'm very lucky because I married my best friend, Tommy, in 1995. Tommy was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2009. He continued to live and enjoy his life while battling this horrible disease. After almost four years of survival, Tommy passed away from pneumonia and sepsis on July 19, 2013. Our sweet Doberman Thor (and Tommy's best buddy) was also diagnosed with cancer and after a two year battle, he passed away on December 21, 2013. I can take some comfort in knowing those two best friends are together again.

Tommy's diagnosis changed everything in our lives and I almost completely quit exercising. I've paid the price for my lack of exercise by adding back some of the pounds and feeling unhealthy and tired. Now I'm ready to start working on getting my life back and spending more time enjoying the outdoor activities I love.

I'm taking things one day at a time. One of the most important lessons I learned from Tommy was to enjoy each and every day that we have here on this Earth because there is no guarantee for tomorrow. If he was able to be happy and enjoy life while he was fighting cancer, then there is no excuse for me to let some extra weight bring me down. So many of us think about how happy we'll be when we reach our goals, but we need to be happy today, while we're working toward those goals. So I will look for something to enjoy in every day, just as Tommy used to do.

My Goals:
To get back to a healthy weight and make more time for hiking, backpacking and kayaking.

My Program:
I use my nutrition tracker faithfully and I now understand how much food I used to eat. I never realized how fast those calories add up until I started putting everything into the tracker. I'm also trying to drink more water and eat healthier foods and get some exercise each day. I plan on doing a lot more hiking on weekends.

Personal Information:
I love hiking and backpacking, kayaking, camping (really anything outdoors) and photography. I have two sons, two step-sons, four grandchildren and a my sweet Doberman, Thor!

Other Information:
Although I live in North Carolina, I love the southwest better than any place else, especially the slot canyons in Utah. I also love photography and have loaded a lot pictures to my flickr page at the link below.

Hi Cindy! How's it going? I finally got the scale to budge by one measly pound - but hey - that's better than it going up.

I could work in a Sunday afternoon for a hike. I live near downtown Greensboro - what would be the best place?

My husband will be taking my Dad (80 y/o :)) skiing sometime in the next couple of months. I could get a babysitter to take my kids to their afternoon church activities and meet you somewhere.

Hi, Cindy! Welcome to the Shutterbugs team. We are a supportive bunch--both for health and photography. I hope you come to love our team! I am also an avid hiker. I've been hiking in Utah, but not any slot canyons yet.

Hi Cindy - Your page looks GREAT!!! You are an attractive lady and you certainly don't look like you have 40# to go. With that said, I know we will both feel better if we get the weight off.

I love the pictures of you and your husband. Those are some of our favorite places too. My husband and I hiked Bryce Canyon when I was 8 months pregnant! You should have seen some of the looks we got as I waddled down the trail - too funny! I learned to water ski on Lake Powell and Zion National park is one of our favorite places as well. Have you ever heard of Hueco Tanks in West Texas? If you like slots, you'd enjoy that place.

My daughters are playing Upward Basketball (and I'm working the concession stand) every Saturday through February. I don't know what your best days to go hike would be, but I could manage a Friday or Wednesday morning best. If a weekend day is best for you, I'll see if my husband would mind watching the girls. Welcome to SparkPeople!!

Let's get this weight off and get healthy!!!!! -donna
