I am enjoying using Action For Happiness's Action Calendars to improve my health & happiness this month/year.

October's theme is optimism (and hope)

Gosh, I've been working on optimism all my life I think! I have had all the books! I have a tendency to see my cup half-empty, and to be easily knocked down by dismal things. It's the way I am wired. I do 101 things to keep myself motivated and moving forwards.

The most effective things are: doing things for others, volunteering, exercising, planning, meditation, making things, participating....... yes, all the normal things people do, but if you tend towards the greyer side of life, it's easy to isolate yourself, withdraw, slow down, ruminate............

My word for the year is ABUNDANCE - which is not the same as 'accumulate'. It means appreciating what I have, feeling supported and seeing the riches that are already in my life.

It also means taking more practical care of my finances and my home - budgeting and cleaning (Fly Lady style) to create, again, a feeling of order and security in my life.

I am 64 yrs old, 5'3" tall. I put on a few pounds over the Xmas holidays. This year I want to stablize my weight at around 110lbs.

As I get older, I'm finding it more and more necessary to make sure I move every day - that means physical training every day - flexibility, strength, mobility, stamina. Being seriously committed to it - not just doing it when I feel like it.

I want to be strong, fit, supple, happy, healthy, full of energy!

Keeping weight down is worthwhile for many reasons - but check this out:-

".. every pound of weight loss results in five pounds of stress taken off your knees, seven pounds off your ankles, and a whopping ten pounds off your spinal discs!"

My Goals:
These are my physical goals: I want to have achieved the following:-

1) to be maintaining my weight around 110lbs by the end of 2019

2) to keep my waist under 29" (I'd like to get it down to 27" eventually!)

3) to maintain a supple and strong body into my later years

4)To be a slim, strong, fit woman!

September 2019: 8 stone 3lbs (115lbs) BMI 21 (normal range) WHR 0.86 (high risk - apple shape)


My Program:
I have begun the Elements programme on GMB Fitness - this is 'functional fitness' - challenging and fun!

I aim to walk or run at least 30 mins every day. Ideally the running needs to be 3 times a week.

For the behavioural/emotional reasons for eating: Linda Spangle's 100 Days of Weight Loss programme

NoS diet - No snacks, sweets or seconds except on days that begin with S.

I have started eating according to the seasonal recommendations of Ayruveda which is suiting me well. I am slowly adopting some of the practices - like eating between 10am and 6pm and having most of my food between 10am and 2pm, with just a small meal around 6pm to finish the day's eating.

I have been a vegetarian since I was 18 yrs old. I am aiming to shift to a mostly vegan diet - removing as much dairy as I can, unless caught in a tricky social situation.

I try to keep certain carbs low: wheat & sugar. I'm considering taking this more seriously

I live by the sea in the South West of the UK. I work full-time to provide services for adults with learning disabilities. I am a Nichiren Buddhist.

    My husband came home and put the grill in the box, cleaned the dog's water bowls and gave her water in the kitchen and in the basement where we feed our dog and cat. He also took the recycling out to the bin on the side porch. I was grateful for a little help.

    I got up this morning and saw a plate and fork on my desk in the living room where my son put it. He ate supper in the recliner since he didn't get home until after we were finished. He has lived elsewhere and when we visited, it was a show place. He is 31.

    I follow FlyLady and I do my cleaning because I like my house to at least not look like dishes are left from a meal days ago, but my husband and son keep me hopping!

    Hi. Thanks for thinking of me. I have been around to log my stuff, but too busy to stop. Have got the passport application! All completed and waiting until I have a spare £70! Daughter has 3 uni interviews to attend over the next couple of weeks though and all-told I need to find £300 just for her to travel alone, let alone if I go with her! One of the things I hate most about living here... she could go anywhere by coach for a fiver from anywhere else! Still on top of things though, so all is well! emoticon
