For a long, long time I was kind of a chunky kid - not terribly overweight, just a little awkward (I'm sure the not-so-stylish glasses I started wearing in 2nd grade didn't help either!) There were many summers when I told myself I would lose weight before school started, convinced that I would become automatically popular when I was smaller. WRONG!

The hope I pinned on being thin unfortunately developed into some serious disordered eating in college. But because I got help early, this didn't last long. I ended up getting involved in several running clubs at school, and I realized pretty quickly that you can't starve yourself and run 8-11 miles per day. I got TINY and STRONG in college, and I felt spectacular.

After college, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism. I started taking meds and immediately lost another 10 pounds. But then the stress of being a teacher set in. I left teaching and went back to graduate school. Unfortunately, the stress of teaching never left me(!), and I ended up on an antidepressant for 1.5 years: Hello, 15 extra pounds of weight!!!!

So, at this point, I've finished graduate school. I'm working at a job I love. I'm no longer taking the antidepressant, and I'm ready to drop the weight I gained on that. I want to be long, lean, and sexy again!

My Goals:
My dream goal is to get back to where I was in summer of 2007. I was ripped and staying between 132 and 135. I have lots of clothing still left from this time, and I'd like to fit into it. If I don't get there, which is possible because my life has changed A LOT since then (less time, more sedentary job, etc.), I'd at least like to see less fat and more muscle than I have now. I don't want to settle, but I do want to be realistic.

My Program:
I am TRYING to follow a regular eating plan that includes at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. I am burning at least 500 calories in my daily cardio workouts. I recently (3/2/09) added 30 Day Shred to my daily routine. (You can read my blog entries to find out how I feel about that!!) Feelings aside, I'm hoping it helps me see those muscles I've been missing so much!!

Personal Information:
I was born and raised in Illinois, where I attended the U of I for college. Then, I taught high school English for three years in rural North Carolina before getting my MSW at UNC-Chapel Hill. My mom has since joined me in NC, so I think I'll stick around for a while. Glad to be here!

Saw your note on the thread "when others started to notice". I have to say that your co-worker that said "you are getting to thin" IS envious. You look great, I love the before and after pics. You look a very healthy weight to me, not "too thin". I think you look great!! Keep up the great work and leave those folk's comments in the dust! :)

Thanks for stopping by and leaving me comments and encouragement! I didn't have to work yesterday and we are lucky enough that we earn "petty" leave for inclement weather days. It was nice to have a day to catch up!

Unfortunately, I didn't get to hit the pool this weekend. Fortunately, it was for the best reason in the world - my goddaughter was born! So we were in the hospital about an hour down the road for most of the weekend. I will try again this Saturday!

Thank you for the congrats on my weight loss, I have to admit I'm pretty excited about it! And it looks like you are doing amazing as well! Keep it up girl, you are almost there!

    Have a strong week!

Thank you for the well wishes! It's ok that you didn't leave a note on the day of - I was too out of it to have found it anyway! LOL! Yesterday I was frustrated because I still didn't have a lot of energy and couldn't make it to the gym, but today I feel 100 times better!

I have had so much applesauce and jello, I could sink a ship! LOL! But I'm ready to be back on board now!

    How is your week going?

Hey there!!! It looks like you're doing a pretty great job yourself! Thanks for the compliment.
What's my stick-to method, you ask...let's see (I have several)...
One thing that was ESSENTIAL to me staying on this road (believe me, I have driven off several times in the past) is learning that all past 'failed attempts' at losing weight were actually learning experience and all got me further down the road to permenant weightloss. In other words, I have NO failures - just lessons.
Another thing that has helped me stay on the wagon - and this is gonna sound like a contradiction - is allowing myself to fall off! For instance, when I REALLY, REALLY want a WHOLE pizza, guess what - I get a WHOLE pizza! When I REALLY want apple pie, I wait a couple of days to see if the craving is still there, and if it is, I eat my apple pie! Now, by no means does this mean that I throw all caution to the wind - I write down EVERYTHING that I put into my mouth. This keeps me from eating myself into a coma :-)
For the most part, I watch what I eat and stay in my calorie range. I try to eat at least 2 servings of veggies a day, but that's about all I can do of 'clean eating' at this point - I basically still eat what I want, just modify it a bit and have smaller amounts.
I also exercise about 6 to 12 days in a row, taking 1 to 2 days off. I find working out exhilarating, and I spice it up by changing it up :-)
Well, I hope I didn't give you more info than you need - I'm known for doing that ;-0
I have been living in Oklahoma for 2 and-a-half years now - boy, do I miss Chicago!!!

thank you for the lovely comment on my blog, katie! you are right, making lists is always a great way to tackle things one at a time if you're feeling overwhelmed. i used to do it all the time, but somehow left off 2 years ago after i moved. i guess i SHOULD restart the good old habit of the to-do list!

btw. love the new haircut! you look just like in you "me at my best" picture now! i am sure by april you WILL be at your best again!
