I have realized that...before I can be successful on any weight loss and fitness plan, I must determine my true motivation. There must have been reasons for my every action that has brought me to where I am today. I decided that it might help if I put these things into writing.

As a child, I was very active and loved sports. I loved to roller skate, ride my bicycle, climb trees, play kick ball & hide-and-go-seek.

As a teenager, I was still very active. I enjoyed playing volleyball, softball, basketball, and I was even a cheerleader in high school. I was an honor student and enjoyed my advanced placement classes. I had a lot of friends and went to every school dance, ball game, and after school function that I could fit into my schedule. My senior year, I went on a school trip to Montgomery and met the love of my life… my best friend… my husband, Frank.

I started my freshman year of college and moved into the dorms. I met lots of new friends and adjusted easily to life as a college student. Then…out of nowhere…I got really sick. I had no idea what was causing the changes in my health, so I went to see my doctor. After months of tests and uncomfortable procedures, I had my diagnosis. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome…or PCOS. PCOS is a hormonal/endocrine disorder that has the following symptoms: enlarged ovaries, multiple ovarian cysts, irregular and painful periods, insulin resistance, weight gain, slow metabolism, and possible infertility. There is no cure for PCOS, but it can be treated with estrogen therapy. So I was put on birth control pills to control my symptoms. I began to see gradual weight gain and a sudden energy loss. Not a good combination!

Also, the diagnosis came within months after my engagement to Frank. He is such an awesome person that he supported me and stood by me every step of the way. After we had been married for six years and both graduated from college, we decided I should stop the birth control and start fertility treatments in order to start our family. I took Clomid and steroids on and off for a couple of years. I gained over 80 pounds! I gained 30 of that within 3 months! It would have all been worth it if it had worked. I got so sick that I had to stop the fertility treatments and go back on the birth control pills. We always thought we would try again when I got healthier.

In August of 2008, our lives changed forever. I was at home one night sitting on the couch and was struck with severe abdominal pain. Frank rushed me to the hospital where they ran test after test and finally 30 hours later, when nobody thought I would survive another hour, the surgeon did exploratory surgery. Diagnosis … Ischemic Bowel. Blood clots had formed in my mesentery arteries and blocked the blood supply to my small intestine causing 3 feet of my intestines to die. The surgeon removed the dead intestine through a 10 inch incision down my belly. I woke up in ICU on a ventilator with another tube running from my nose to my stomach. My first question was, “What was wrong?” I was told that the estrogen in the birth control pills caused the blood clots and that I should have a hysterectomy. Frank and I were totally devastated. For one week in the ICU and another week in a regular room at the hospital, all I could think about was how close I came to death and how we would never have children. Not happy thoughts! But, Praise God, my faith got me through it.

In November 2008, I had the surgery that ended our dreams of having children. It was one of the worst days of my life, but … again … God gave me peace and comfort. My relationship with Jesus Christ has grown and matured.

But through all of this I have realized some things.

***First, the most important thing in my life is Jesus Christ and my relationship with Him.

***Second, my family and friends love me and spending time with them is so very important. More important than my job!

***Third, I have spent most of my marriage focusing on our future family. Now, I am focusing on my husband and how much joy he brings to my life.

***Fourth, my health is very important and I should spend time exercising and eating healthy foods, because I AM WORTH IT!

I don’t know why I have gone through some of these trials and struggles … but I do know this… I am stronger today than I ever have been in my life. I have my priorities in order and have a plan to reach my goals. I am living each day to the fullest and am finally comfortable being me!
