The Way of Harmony & Reason for Being

The Japanese word "Wado" has followed me for years, since I first began studying Wado Ryu karate in 2008. Wado translates to "the way of harmony" and is central to how I am seeking to live my life in harmony - mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Ikigai is a reference to my "reason for being" or finding what makes me happy, my reason for waking up every morning. Ikigai strives to find the place where all of the following overlap.
What you love (Passion and Mission)
What you are good at (Passion and Profession)
What you can be paid for (Profession and Vocation)
What the world needs (Mission and Vocation)

I want to wake up every morning with a sense of purpose and go to bed each day feeling balanced. In between, I want to lean into healthy relationships with people and food. Through most of my adult life, I have carried weight that has held me back from the life I want to live. Now that I am more focused on all of the above, I am finding that my outside is starting to reflect more of my inside.

Fitness Minutes: 22,687

My Goals:
To move with intention everyday toward a healthier me: physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Short Term Goals:
Over the month of August, complete the following:
30 minutes or walking/running 3 x week
5 minutes of rowing 3 x week
30 squats each day, adding 1 more each day to build to 60 over 30 days

Medium Term Goals:
From August - December 2020, complete the following:
Lose 1-2 pounds per week
Maintain accountability with a core group
Complete my next karate belt test

Long Term Goal:
Run the Marine Corps Marathon in 2021 in honor of my late husband, CTRSN Jason Springer.


My Program:
Sleep is the foundation of my program, from which all other things flow. From being rested, I find I have more energy to exercise. From exercise, I find I need water to refresh and stay hydrated. From having water on board, I find I don't overeat and am prone to make healthier food choices. My whole cycle starts with proper sleep!

My core fitness occurs in the early morning in order to get it out of the way and start the day with good energy. I'm also moving intentionally so as not to sit at my desk all day. In addition to cardio, I'm building in weight training using body weight resistance and a 10 lb kettlebell and 10 lb dumbbells. I try to incorporate as often as I can additional exercise such as kayaking, hiking, swimming, and anything else I'm inspired to move and do that is creative.




Personal Information:
I am a married, homeschooling mom of three, a Navy veteran, and I work for an amazing nonprofit organization (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors). In 2008, I used SP and lost 61 pounds before becoming pregnant with my twins, then two years later, my niece. Now I am using it again to connect with friends and family to reclaim our health together, encouraging one another to success.

I love singing, music, reading, writing, exploring, being creative, spending time with family and friends, traveling and meeting people. Karate is in my heart and I secretly want to be a runner.


Other Information:
Like everyone, I have had my ups and downs. I used to eat emotionally and have a true addiction to sugar, but I am determined to remain focused. The glass is half full for me and I don't tend to dwell on what is behind me, choosing instead to press on. I believe in surrounding myself with people who are uplifting and unafraid to tackle the challenges of life. Practicing Philippians 4:8 which says, "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." is foundational for me. I will continue to dwell on the positive of life, of myself, my circumstances and count them all for good - for without them I would not grow!

    Visited your page after reading the inspiring article about your story. And found that we have something wonderful in common: Spark veterans who shared a goal of getting fit before having kids, then had 2 pregnancies and the accompanying yo-yo weight...

    Dunno where you're at now in your journey, but thanks for the inspiration emoticon I had my 2 sons back-to-back, and almost 5 years later now, after the blurry time of no sleep and neglecting myself, am slowly rebuilding my motivation and momentum to get fit again. Congratulations on the personal successes and gorgeous family, best wishes to you!
