After thirty plus years of failed weight loss attempts while trying to eat healthy, unknowingly how adversely artificial sweeteners and added sugar actually affected me all those years. Unknowingly being trapped in a sugar/food addiction which caused endless hunger issues, emotional eating and avoidable food eating binges. Unknowingly no matter how determined I was, how hard I tried I never stood a fair chance being suffocated by my sugar & food addiction more powerful than I ever could imagined.

Cutting out all artificial sweeteners January of 2013 and feeling considerably better as a result, less hungry at times but failed believe or link it was responsible for my constant hunger issues because I was still using sugar until the day December 20th 2013 when I also cut out added sugar. The one constant variable with all my failed with loss attempts was I would always try to cut out the sugar and limit fat intake while greatly increasing sugar free everything, being addicted to diet soda for over 40 years. I made the fatal mistake over 25 years ago of trusting what I read especially when it came to the book sugar busters. It clearly states that artificial sweeteners are perfectly fine but if you cut out all added sugar all your cravings for sugar will go away ending the syndrome of being hungry all the time. What the book failed to mention is in the real world some individuals are adversely affected by artificial sweeteners than sugar itself. That was me in my 3-4 failed attempts when I decided to try no added sugar which left me starving and craving insanely by 2-3 weeks into it and the eventual unavoidable food eating binges. After cutting out artificial sweeteners in January I initially lost 50 pounds thinking I found something that might help. Then gained it all back right up to my heaviest again with intense sugar cravings through the summer drinking a lot of regular soda instead of diet soda. Still I felt considerably better than I had in a long time having all the artificial sweeteners and resigned to the fact I will not go back to using them but my weight problem was still unsolved. 48 years old at that time, age was catching up, running out of hope, starting to resign to the fact, becoming scared enough that I might never be able to get this weight off and facing living in a wheel chair very soon and eventual early death.

Already having the artificial sweeteners out of system for almost a year in early December I came across an article of information on the web that artificial sweeteners may be causing sugar cravings. It was barely enough hope to prompt me to make the very difficult choice to try the no added sugar one more time. When I started December 20th I remember how serious I had to give this an effort as it now or never, but in back of my mind I knew I was destined for failure. When I started I believe I probably went at least 350 of the 355 days in 2013 of having at least one large bowl of ice cream. Even though it was a month long challenge I knew I could not go any longer than 7 days without treating myself to a bowl of ice cream. I seriously doubted I would last more than two weeks & was still impossible for me to link or even think artificial sweeteners had anything to do with my lifelong hunger issues. But what transpired withing a few short days, no added sugar in absence of artificial sweeteners was life changing.

It was the most surreal feeling in the world to be able to go the first time in my life hours on hours not being hungry on food after eating & ending the being hungry all the time syndrome. It was at that same time I realized artificial sweeteners were the unknowingly constant roadblock, preventing me to loose the weight through all the past attempts to eating healthy as I enjoy now. I remember being so furious with artificial sweeteners upon this discovery but at same time overwhelming relief understanding I just found the solution to my life long weight problem. It suddenly become crystal clear in my mind I freed myself of my sugar and food addiction and nothing was preventing me from loosing all the weight then keep if off forever. Which was an incredible feeling just a few days past my start of December 20th having this inner feeling of just knowing I was going to actually do it this time. I felt as if I won the lottery.

For the first time I understood how food affects my natural hunger, could distinguish thirst from hunger and felt in complete control of my eating habits. My taste buds changed considerably, foods that used to taste bland taste sweet, all of sudden I was craving water as my preferred choice of drink and basically had to relearn my eating habits in absence of added sweetness. Those changed eating habits were lucky enough to favor vegetables in favor of bread and pasta. Sugar cravings became non existent, realizing the importance of deciding eventually to make artificial sweeteners and added sugar non negotiable for life.

Its Feb 6th, 2016 down 225 pounds, not one day since Dec 20th having one bowl or even spoonful of ice cream. There were a few difficult moments in the early months of 2014 but squashed those temptations with full fat cheese. By July 2014 my non negotiable for life stance became permanent. My resistance to ice cream and all the other goodies has became so strong that it no longer bothers me in presence of others. In fact I enjoy the scents watching people eat the poison to me. If I ever go back to using sugar it would be the end of life, worse than the death penalty. The non negotiable is the most important easy daily choice I have to make numerous times every single day the rest of my life.
