Hola! I am an Army wife and mother of two girls - Marissa 10 and Vanessa 8.

A little history... When I first joined Sparkpeople I weighed 270 lbs and had lost all hope of ever losing the weight or even feeling good. I had a long history of depression and many medical problems, the worst being a weak abdominal wall that caused me to get hernias again and again. I had surgeons refuse to operate believing that I would just herniate again and then lecture me on losing weight before they'd fix them. How do you lose weight when you can't do much of anything. I was pretty immobile with a bad knee, big holes in my abdomen, borderline diabetes I developed and pretty severe anemia. Then my gall bladder decided it hated me. I went in for surgery and stopped breathing just as they put me under. They woke me and rescheduled me. Once that was taken care of my new family practitioner said it was time to see about a gastric bypass to assist with the weight loss.

I had a gastric bypass in June 2010. I had many complications - mostly being 3 more hernias (total 6 now) and my surgeon did a tummy tuck for me when I was still at 170 lbs to get rid of the hernia's instead of waiting on goal weight. It seemed unlikely I could hit it even with the assistance of the bypass due to the immobility I suffered from the hernias. Since then I've had complications healing from that, but I am down to 145 lbs and over all I don't regret having surgery. It was needed and I am much healthier and much happier. As long as I continue walking and be careful hopefully I will have no more hernias and I will be able to maintain my weight.

I can breathe better, I can move easier, I still have severe anemia, but I think it's going to get better, and I can sing again! The rest is a small price to pay for getting where I am and moving forward. :)

Update April 1, 2013... Well sometimes life just doesn't go as planned. My husband was medically retired from the Army at 17 years in and it dropped our income severely. We were homeless for a while and I couldn't eat right for several months due to the money issues. By the time we found a place, my body had been in starvation mode for so long I'd packed on 30 lbs again. Not to mention the 3 hernias I have now that I will have surgery for in a month or two. I'm what they call a "hernia former" that develops "swiss cheese syndrome" - holes everywhere in the abdominal wall. They will fix these and I will get more and they will fix those, but eventually surgery won't be beneficial as it weakens the wall more each time. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. We are scraping by at the moment but I am determined to get back to 145 no matter what so I am back and I am going to do this. Everyday is a new chance to start again.

My Goals:
Currently my goal is to get back down to 145 or so and to have my current hernias fixed. Recovery will keep me immobile for a while so I want to lose some before surgery and eat right while recovering.

My Program:
I'm going to walk 60 minutes 3 times a week and do upper body strength training 3 days a week. I cannot work my abdominal core because I risk more hernias, but I'll do the best I can.

Personal Information:
My family and I are in Basehor, KS now. I'm finally close to family - my dad and step family. The school here is great and the town is safe. It's quiet at night and we love it.

Other Information:
Just taking things one day at a time.
