... to enhance the quality of life, health, and vitality of myself and those around me!

\wäŋk, wȯŋk\

• Policy expert: an expert in matters of public policy, especially in government, the economy or diplomacy, as in, “The dinner conversation was dominated by deep discussions among the Administration's policy wonks.”

• One who studies an issue or a topic thoroughly or excessively.

• An expert in a field, TYPICALLY SOMEONE WHO IS FAIRLY YOUNG AND VERY INTELLIGENT. (emphasis added, tee hee)

My weight wasn't a particular problem until I approached thirty, at which point I joined Weight Watchers. I already had healthy eating habits (whole grains, plant-based diet, etc.) but I learned so much more about food portions, low-fat cooking, establishing an exercise routine, and staying motivated. My now-husband, who needless to say has never had a weight problem, was extremely supportive. I was very successful and maintained a healthy weight for several years.

My weight gradually crept back up as I got married, finished graduate school, went on the job market, moved, and started a new job. Come to think of it, my exercise habits slipped more than my eating habits during this time. Then we had our first baby and I went back to work. I had less time than ever to exercise or cook, my "fast fueler" tendencies really came out, and I returned to my previous high weight.

When our oldest was 2 or 3, I embarked on my second concerted weight loss effort. Building on my Weight Watchers skills, I used a Palm based program -- much like the Spark Nutrition tracker -- to track my food, I worked with a personal trainer at the local Y, and I checked in weekly with a friend by e-mail. Again, I was successful at losing weight, though I didn't quite reach the weight or level of fitness I had the first time around.

Enter becoming pregnant with twins. Naturally (wink), I embraced the advice to gain as much weight as possible so that if the babies came early, they would be bigger and more developed. After they were born (a smidge early and very healthy), I was more sleep-, time-, and energy-deprived than ever. Our oldest needed a lot of attention after being displaced by two babies, plus around the time I went back to work, I had a couple of (routine?) midlife/family/health crises. At some point, I simply abandoned all restraint, which brought me to my current starting point, even heavier (gulp) than when I was carrying twins and twice as heavy (double gulp) as when we got married.

Now I'm ready to do what needs to be done to improve my life -- foremost my weight and overall health. I'm very glad to have found SparkPeople and so far, I'm off to a good start!

Hi! If you get a chance stop the the Growing Up in the 70's board :) July's Movie of the Month is The Rocky Horror Picture Show, our new band of the week is The Beatles, our TV show of the week is The White Shadow, and Sybil is our summer reading selection. We have a variety of threads that reminisce about all things in the 70's and would love to have you join in the conversation! Have a nice weekend!
