I am 29 years old and a graduate student. I have decided to get fit because I want to be a healthy strong person with an active life. I am currently working through the C25K training plan, just finished week 7, and have registered for a February 5K (I want to work on speed training after completing C25K). I also completed an exercise study this summer where I did 30 minutes of strength training three days a week (ok, it was really more like 23 min.) Because of the strength training, I have more balance now and that awful arm flab that was starting to creap in is now gone, replaced by muscles that I didn't even know I had. I have been vegetarian all my life and almost always eat healthy food (just too much of it).

My starting weight this summer was 172 lbs. I'm now at 148 and I hope to be 145 by 09/01/2010. Ultimately, I think I would like to be 135 but more importantly, I want to be fit/toned and able to run 5K with some ease...Endurance first, then speed.

Oh, and I have ADHD so I may lose interest in this soon...who knows? :-) actually though, exercise really helps lessen the symptoms of ADHD.

My Goals:
I am registered to run a 5K in February so I'd better keep working on increasing my endurance and then maybe on speed. I'm hoping I still have time for this training while in Graduate School.

I want to be completely fit, no pudge in the tummy or excess fat anywhere else either. I wanted to play sports when I was a kid but my parents are practically hermits and believed that their kids should be as well...Never too late to be athletic though :-) I know and admire people much older than me who are far fitter (e.g. neighbor in his 60s or 70s who cycles uphill to work every morning at 12mph! wow).

Physical Fitness Goals:
- Weight (135 lbs ultimately)
- Endurance
- Strength
- Flexibility

Vanity Goals:
- Size 8 Denim Jeans
- Beautiful Skin
- Flat Stomach

Life Goals:
- Marriage
- Children
- PhD
- Working to Eliminate Poverty

My Program:
*C25K Training Plan
*Strength Training 3xWeek
*Cardio 5xWeek (MWThF and Saturday OR Sunday)

*Protein-Rich Breakfast
*Lots O'Water (8+ cups)
*Lots O'Sleep (8+ hrs)

Actually, a lot of the time I only do cardio 3 or 4 days a week but this is fine...Really, the cardio exercise is like a medicine to be taken as needed...If I want to keep losing weight though then I have to do cardio very regularly (in addition to everything else) but once I get to 135 or so, then I will reevaluate and probably do cardio mostly as part of a running habit or some other "fun" activity (like hiking, looove hiking).

And I plan to add some kind of flexibility exercises to this program at some point. I really want to start doing Yoga but I don't know how I could fit it in with everything else while I'm in grad school...I'll see.

Personal Information:
I am from the Planet Bean, a gas giant in the Candy2 Nebula. I am a funny, sarcastic, and friendly alien with neon pink antennae.

Also, I am a graduate student of Environmental Science and Engineering, beginning Fall 2010.

And I'm a rabid progressive who wants to change the world for the better, not just her own body and mind.

Other stuff:
I love science fiction! Dr.Who, Star Trek TNG and OS, Eureka!, Firefly, Pitch Black, Aliens, Bicentennial Man, and lots more. Books: Asimov's Stories including I, Robot and other stories from the Robot Dreams compilation, also Looking Backwards, The End of Poverty, and more...

I love good vegetarian food, can cook, and also like to eat savory food (say, dinner leftovers) for breakfast. Seitan rocks but, actually, Bean Burritos are my favorite! And these two can be combined...Yummmmm

Other Information:
I'm looking for a fitness buddy in Pasadena or somewhere nearby. Want to go hiking or just take a walk through old Pasadena? I like to make exercise fun/social and sometimes just work hard towards a goal (like running a 5K in February). Mostly, my "free" time will be on the weekends I think.

I also want to start doing yoga. I used to practice and teach tai chi but I barely remember the moves now. Still, I crave these kind of calming exercises that increase your flexibility. I've also considered martial arts but I think my graduate program will be competitive enough without making my workouts like that as well!

Hi! Wow! how time flies when we're having fun!

I've been really busy and enjoying the festivities of the Easter season (which is my favorite holiday by the way) and now I'm about to get ready for some over night company that will be here in the early afternoon tomorrow then we will be getting ready to go to the coast for some fun and relaxation. When the sun comes out...I go out! It's great!

How about you? Have you been busy or are you getting ready for BBQ season/summer which will be upon us very soon now!

I read that persimmons have high levels of fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium and antioxidants which are all super weapons against atherosclerosis! Who knew?

Have a great week and a great Mother's Day on the 8th!

Howdy and welcome to the Browncoat Team!

We're a kind of laid back bunch that enjoys any and all discussion of Firefly, Serenity, and anything our BDHs are involved in. Or whatever else we decide to talk about! Please nose around and feel free to jump in!

If you would like, please join one or more of our team goals. They are set up to emulate our BDHs - a shiny goal for any of us!

I just read a cure for bad Mondays!

It said that when you're feeling groggy or foggy to sniff ground
sage for an energy boost. Research showed that sage aroma
suppresses the enzyme acetylcholinesterase that prevents the
brain's ability to feel alert and happy! Not only that, but aromatherapy
experts say sage can improve mental focus AND memory!

My personal suggestion is...fresh ground or a good brand of coarse
ground sage. The cheap stuff is very offensive to my nose.

Have a great week and remember to stay focused!

emoticon Hello again, I'm back to see how you are doing and to let you know I'm thinking of you.

    Here's my tip for today:
You can't be happy all of the time; but you can focus your thoughts on happy things such as family, friends, job, hobbies, or whatever you find important.

Sparkpeople has a great selection of positive articles and comments, here's one of my favorites: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/quotes
I hope you have a really great week!
