Now I have to get a liver biopsy!

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Well it all started out with the body fat check last month, that had me go see my doctor, who ordered a blood test and then dismissed the 3% body fat as a machine error but the blood test showed elevated liver enzymes of ALT and AST a little lower than double the normal level, so he ordered two more of the same blood tests along with some additional blood work to be done to check for other things, then he send me to a liver specialist that it takes two weeks to get in to see, and I also have to get a liver ultrasound done, go see the specialist just have him say you need to get a liver biopsy since we cannot find any reason why your enzymes are elevated. THAT IS IT! Just send me off to have a huge needle stuck in me and poke my liver. I'm a little pissed off at the whole thing and really wondering why he did not do anything else or at least talk to me more about everything, just dropped the biopsy thing on me and say good job on the weight loss, gee thanks!

So now I am going to call the specialist back and get some more answers about all of this before I get any biopsy done. I may even post to some medical sites to see what I should do and what I should look for and ask about. I just need to vent about this because it is all so sudden and unclear. Sometimes it feels like ever time I reach a good physical point in my life something knocks me back down again, just hope this is not the case this time. I will say I will be thankful if I did catch something like liver cancer or something else early all because of a wrong body fat % testing. It could be good luck but somehow right now I do not feel so lucky, just overwhelmed.

I looked at the AGA guidlines for my liver procedure and it said 6 months of obsevation is what should be done not a liver biopsy, so I canceled the procedure and asked to just have a CT scan and keep having my blood checked. Then if things do not change I will have the liver biopsy.

Update: 5-12-08
I saw a 2nd doctor who ran some more blood tests and confirmed that my exercising is causing my elevated levels in my liver. He cannot figure out why the other doctor wanted a liver biopsy. Doc told me to lesson my workouts and eat more, dont hear that often from a doctor and he told me this over the phone and even said he was saying it with a smile on his face. So I am meeting with a friend who is a trainer and he will hlp me redo my workouts to get me back in order.

I will keep my fingers crossed and send good thoughts that it is only something minor.
