Was That My Name They Announced??

Sunday, July 20, 2008

Well I ran my 2nd 5K on Saturday Morning! It was humid (85%) and questioned myself somewhat while I was warming up on the reasons I signed up for the race knowing full well that it would be hot!! We got our t-shirts and bag and headed for the car to drop off and to pin my number on! My daughter laughed when she looked at hers to pin on and her age listed as 14 instead 19, mine read 49 year old male! Oh well with a name like Rose Thomas I guess someone could mix it up as Thomas Rose! I was ready, I knew this route well, but from my car and not from running it! It was an out and back course so I got to see the fast runners as they passed me still heading to the turn around! My first miles pace was 12:40 faster than I normally run. I tried to keep pace with another runner who was just ahead of me! The last mile was hot and I was glad to see the finish line when I did! I crossed over smiling to see I cut 2 minutes and some seconds off my first race time!! 42:12! As we stood around drinking our water and chatting with a few other runners they were ready to announce the winners! I love hearing the names as they approach the table and get that special medal! Each age category was announced .The 44-49 year old male division was next, my ears perked up since that is my age and might even know the winners! Imagine my surprise when Thomas Rose with my address was announced! My daughter and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing! I made my way to the table after the last medal was handed out and tried to explain to the volunteers much as I would like a medal with the time I had and since I don't think I qualify as a male runner I felt it should go to the REAL 3rd place winner!! We laughed the whole way home! A race with a 42:12 time great for me but even sweeter when I heard my name!! May not ever happen again!!

Congratulations on a great run. If you placed 3rd in the men's division, I'd bet you earned a medal in the women's.

Way to go, Rose!! Or should I say Thomas...LOL!! What a great story. I love that your daughter ran with you again - that's great! I would love for my husband to join me in my quest, but he'd prefer to wait at the finish line with our little ones!!

Congrats on your 2nd race!!! And welcome to the 10K training! :o)

Congrats on the 5K! And too funny that you were Tom for a day and that your daughter was 5 years younger. What a stitch! Congrats also on trimming a couple of minutes off your first 5K time! That is awesome and in this hot weather - quite a feat!

You have inspired me to "just do it" and sign up for a 5K/family fun run on August 9. I did my first 5K back in May with the family, then did a 2-mile fun run a couple of weeks ago while on vacation, so it's time to revisit the 5K.

By the way, during the fun run, they recorded my time wrong. They had me coming in 7 minutes sooner than I actually did! What a hoot!

Congrats again and WAY TO GO!!!!
