Comfort Food

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Today I was reading the comics that I subscribe to. Two of the five of them were about dieting/weight or self image. Surprising? No.

Here is today's 'Cathy'.

Cathy: Chocolate, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie, cookies, nut rolls, fudge...they're called "comfort foods" because they conjure up happy memories of childhood.
But those same foods have been the downfall of every diet and cost me thousands of dollars and years of grief! What about the miserable memories of adulthood they conjure up?!!

Coworker: There, there....someone needs pudding.

Cathy: You have pudding??

I had to laugh because I don't know anyone who considers a leafy green salad loaded with veggies and low-fat dressing a comfort food :)

What is your comfort food?

    'The "shoveling" is comforting somehow.'

    Ah ha!! emoticon
Don't know why, but that made me laugh so hard.

Typically my comfort foods used to be a combination of carbs and cheese: macaroni and cheese (my mom's homemade), nachos (preferably the ones from 7-eleven), cheesy mashed potatos, cheetos, cheese flavored pringles, sociables crackers with EZ cheese (the canned cheese). If it's cheesy and has massive amounts of simple carbohydrates, it hit my happy button.

Anything chocolate is comfort food for me. Also anything that allows me to tak a lot of bites. The "shoveling" is comforting somehow. I will say this: during one of the few times that I was actually successful with my "diet" I did find that a nice large salad with tons fo veggies on it did serve as a sort of "comfort food" because of all the constant eating it allowed. :) emoticon

What a great comic strip - how true! I have MANY comfort foods - just depends on how quickly I need to get something in my mouth! One of my favorites is macaroni and cheese. Another is mashed potatoes. Then, of course, the normal binge/shovel into my mouth foods: potato chips, FRITO'S...anything that ends in "O's"
Your page and blogs are inspiring - thanks for sharing!
