I DID IT!

I am so thankful that I found Sparkpeople. As a result of my self-talk I believed that I was "stuck" with these extra 15 - 20 pounds that I had put on over the past 20 years, until that day my husband commented on my "tummy". The second time he did it; that was it! To top it off one of my friends lost 40 lbs and looked a million bucks - but with the help of a very expensive diet program. So the search began.

With the help of a close friend and the internet I found Sparkpeople. I spent hours reading what others were writing and became convinced THIS is for me - I can DO this. I knew at the beginning it would mean a real lifestyle change for me. At the time I was cooking meals for 3 - 5 hungry broaders and had the reputation of being "the dessert queen". Although I love walking, I had never joined an aerobics class before as I tend to be "clutsy". I continued to make good healthy meals and desserts but I took control of what I ate and joined my friend’s aerobics class. I became almost addicted to Sparkpeople - spending hours reading and tracking daily.

I discussed my goals with my husband as I wanted his support. My goal was to lose 15 lbs and 12 inches. in 6 months. The reward would be that I put $50 into a bank account each week and at the end of the 6 months if I had reached and maintained my goal my husband promised we would do a trip. (He is not a traveller.) Otherwise he would have that money to use for whatever he wanted. He saw that as a "win-win" for both of us.

Within the first week I saw results and I was stoked at how easy it was. I learned so much. First - I knew I drank a fair amount of water but when I tracked, it was usually only 4 - 6 glasses. Second - I realized that I wasn't eating enough protein. Third - I began to read labels. Fourth - I took control of the amount of sodium I consumed. Within 3 months I had met my goals. Christmas and New Year's were easy; I enjoyed hosting the traditional Christmas dinner and our annual New Year's cookies open house event without any serious setback. My six months will be completed Feb 15 and I have lost 19 - 20 lbs and I have dropped 2 sizes. The old clothes are gone and my husband loves the new me. My daughters comment was a highlight. "Mom, a year ago I would never have believed that you would look this good." Since my family has a history of heart attacks, I say: Thank you Sparkpeople.
