i almost ran yesterday...

Thursday, March 19, 2009

that's it.....i know sounds droll, huh? well, i haven't ran in AT LEAST 22 years, and that's when i was forced to in high school gym. since then, i figured that it would take one of my children to be in death's grip to get me to run again......i've been WELL overweight for a while, and i have trouble with my joints due to gymnastic injuries when i was younger.

so, yesterday, we FINALLY have an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day out, and i convinced my 16 y.o. & my 5 y.o. girls to go for a brisk walk with me. we did great, and at times, we said, okay, we're gonna run to the third telephone pole.....then a brisk walk again. we did this about 4-5 times. kristen, of course, was able to keep up no problem - she's a bit taller than me and her stride is longer, and paigey kept up the best as her little 5-year-old legs would let her! she was such a good sport! i did end up carrying her for a little while, UPHILL no less, so i feel like i got an even better workout. it was interesting too, paige weighs the approiximate amount equal to the amount of weight i've lost, so i got a chance to see what it was like to try that walk before i lost weight - what a difference!! WOW!
i had actually been overdoing it at the gym lately, so this was my impromptu substitute workout....and it still worked! i logged a 1.1 lb loss this morning.
so, again that's it, not real exciting, but it was a tad bit for me!

I'm sure you can count paige as weights if you need to add in resistance training, lol. Just switch sides every so often emoticon I'm sure you guys had fun.

I know all about the wanting to run but having questionable joints. My knees are not what they used to be. Probably the extra weight and the fact that I USED to be a runner for years. Well, this week I ran 1/2 of a 10 minute mile in the middle of my 15 minute mile walking (for 60 mins) and I was sore but I felt so accomplished. I will try to do that every few days and work my way up. Had I done it 2 days in a row I think I would probably have hurt myself. Baby steps. My thighs got a good work out, though!

It sounds like you did run yesterday! It also sounds like a really fun fitness time with your kids. Thats a 2 for the price of 1 kind of thing emoticon I always hated running in high school but have actually worked myself up to running on a the treadmill! I know what you mean about overdoing it at the gym Sometimes I think my body really benefits from a long leisurely walk outdoors rather than a kick-ass workout at the gym . It's good to mix it up and it's good to rest......the older I get the more I appreciate the recovery time!
