Race Report and Gardening Update

Monday, May 04, 2009

I was going to post my race report yesterday but after getting home from the race the first thing I did was start on the garden! More on that in a bit.

The race was really quite nice. New Albany is a very FANCY town - Where we started the condos around us start (START) at $400k! A CONDO??? Anyway - not the point - but the scenary was very nice. The scenary is important because I realized when I got there that I had forgotten my ear phones so NO MUSIC - WAHHHH!!!! It was actually not bad at all - it was kinda nice.

There were around 50-75 people - competitive walkers, runners, and just plain old walkers. We were off and up a gentle slope we went. We wound through a neighborhood of $600k+ homes and I noticed that it was mostly downhill - uh oh - since it's an out and back course we gotta head back up those hills. But this is Central Ohio - what we call hills some of you think that they are flat - so it wasn't all that bad :)

The first mile I did in 8:50. Pretty darn fast for me! 2nd mile I did right around 9 mins. I got to the half way mark and stopped for a little walk break and to eat some sport beans. I walked for no more than 2 minutes and headed out again. Then - at 2.5 miles my left knee starts to twinge! UGH!! I hadn't brought my knee brace cause usually it's around mile 7 that it starts hurting - I wasn't expecting it at mile 2.5. I had to walk at mile 3 and then at 3.5 miles. I need to get myself to a sports medicine doctor! I'm also going to experiment with running with the brace on to see how far I can go with it. Still, perhaps it's a good thing that I didn't attempt the half marathon on Saturday with the knee acting up like that!

My official race results are 4 miles in 40:11, #40 overall, #20 out of all women and #4 in my age group - 40-49. So not bad at all especially since my knee was acting up and I had to slow down significantly.

My next race is the Komen Race for the Cure 5K. Wish me luck!

Now - onto the garden. The weather is funny. Saturday and Sunday were supposed to be cloudy and on Sunday there was a chance for some possible showers. The weather is like Vegas baby! We're playing the odds. Well, I won because Saturday was sunny and beautiful. I taught Strength - burned 650. Then I taught Cycling - 781. Then I got home and worked in the yard. The grass was soooo long! I had mowed it just the Saturday before. It took me 2.5 hours to mow and bag the clippings. I wore the HRM while I did the yard work and it tallied up 1038 calories! It was tough work. After that and knowing that I had a race I took it easy the rest of the night.

Sunday - well, you've read the race report (if you've made it this far) and then we started on the yard. It took me a while to get the area prepped and all the grass mowed down. Then we started loading up the dirt. Yup - I wore the HRM and it tallied 1857 calories for the "gardening!" Now - why in the world can't I lose any weight??? I just don't know.

Here's the forecast - and it's every changingness (is that a word?) and some shots of us at work. Wednesday looks like rain but the goal is to get the garden part of the dirt done then I can spend tomorrow working on the side flower beds. I hope I have enough dirt!

Gratuitous Dog Picture :)

Off to eat breakfast and then get to the yard.

    Great job!

It's funny you mention Sport Beans; I love those things. I should see someone about my right knee as well. It mostly bothers me while doing yoga and posing on it. I did a bike ride for Breast Cancer out in those neighborhoods last fall; simply an amazing area.

Garden looks like it's coming along just fine. I'm praying that the rain holds off until late Wednesday night. My yard needs mowed also and I don't want to pay someone to do it again.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Congrats on a great time. Yeah...get yourself into a sports med doc just so you know what is going on and you can continue running. (FYI: Our group uses Dr. Bright with Max Sports over by Riverside if you are interested)

Pics of the garden look great! Very nice productive weekend for you I would say.

Holy smokes Kris, what a weekend!!

I hope that your knee feels better soon!! Yay for your performance despite the twinge!

Are you getting enough calories in?? If you're burning 2500+ in just two days, you need to fuel that body properly for sure!!

(AND, I would like to mention that we have not yet needed to cut our grass...it's still its' lovely shade of winter brown - with specks of green)
