My son's wedding with less than 500.00 and planned in 4 days ... AWESOME ~!!!!

Sunday, June 07, 2009

i wanted to wait to blog about Michael's wedding until i had developed the pictures and also recovered from stress of planning a wedding in 4 days.
I don't reccomend planning a wedding in such a short time with out God's Favor and bull dog tenacity! I'm thinking to my self .. wow where do i start....

Mike My son lost his job 2 months ago. Beside Michigan, South Carolina has the 2nd most unemployed people. He lost his apartment and him and his fiancé moved in with a " old family friend" we use to go to church together. This young man is Mikes age. He and Mike were never close but he offered Mike to move in with him it was across the street from the apartment he had to move from.

Mike told me right away that there were alot of drugs and bad stuff going on and he needed to find somewhere else soon as he could .

As a praying Mama i asked God for protection over him and Dami.
a few weeks later the young man he moved in with was arrested.
He robbed several pharmacies he was cooking meth. ( Please pray for Anthony)

Once again Mike and Dami were about to be homeless.
i'm friends with Anthony's mom.
She told Mike that he and Dami were welcome to move in with her....
But they had to be married. They have been engaged almost a year and I was never happy about them living together, But i always showed them both Love and they knew and respected my boundaries at my home.

so Mike asked me on a wednesday " Mom can we have the money for a marriage license? " Of course it was " promised to be paid back after they both found work.

So thursday i called my friend and asked if they could move in with her . She explained since her husband passed away a year ago she would not mind the help with the children.. some of which are special needs kids.

Thursday night we began to plan. keep in mind i working or was on call all of these 4 days i planned the wedding. Thursday was also my daughters birthday .
We went out to eat and wrote down everything Dami wanted .... then we asked her what was most important to her in case we could not do all of it.
She picked out a lovely powder blue for her color theme. God has also been so faithful in growing Dami in the Lord the last few months. Their was a young in the apartment above her that invited her to her church. she started going and growing so much spiritually. My son does not currently go to church. He was in alot of trouble growing up and when he went to juvenile Prison for a few months out of town he felt like our old pastor abandoned him. ... Anyway he has alot of hurt and issues with church in general ... like so many .

After dinner that night we went to Walmart and picked out 10 heart shaped clear candy dishes. They cost 97 cents each !
To put inside of it we found small blue round candle holders 50 cents each.
we went to the dollar tree where EVERYTHING is $1.00 there we got a bag of clear stones and a bag of blue stones. My son wanted blue scented potpourri poured over the rocks but under the candle holder ... they were our center pieces on the 10 tables. Our church ( the Prayer center ) has a coffee shop that tall round tables we used . we also picked up a couple packs of confetti like stuff to sprinkle on the tables. We also put a mirrors under the candle centerpiece. ( i borrowed those from my pastor) I bought all the table cloths plates napkins at the dollar tree. i had some linen at my house for the bridal table and the gift table.
There had just been a wedding the week before at the prayer center.
They had left a aisle runner for the bride to walk on there. there was also a beautiful white box decorated for cards. i found a guest sign in book at walmart for 3.00.
We moved the glass podium into the foyer it a a clear piece of glass on 2 white pedestals it made a beautiful sign in area.

i had some things i had packed away from when some friends renewed their vows in my closet alot of that was used.. various toole and ribbons and bows. What i didn't have the dollar tree did .. lol

We bought a unity candle set from a craft store. The unity candle was very important to dami. She had made it clear that was one thing she wanted to have even if she had to cut something somewhere else.

She borrowed a wedding dress from a friend.
I bought her a outfit for the reception and for her wedding night and a white pair of shoes.

I called a old friend i use to go to church with She made a 2 tier wedding cakes with hearts in it . she gave it to them as a wedding gift.

I called another old friend and she did the brides makeup and hair. no cost

for the reception we took dinner rolls and filled them with ham and turkey.
We even found ham salad the day before the wedding for a dollar a container.
We put meatballs and cocktail weenies in crock pots with barbecue sauce.
another close friend made dip for chips and a veggie tray. we also had mints P-nuts and chocolate covered pretzels. ( As i said before most of this came from the dollar tree!)

I asked my best friend to help me get the food set up before the wedding.
her and i were running around sunday like chickens with are heads chopped off i wish i would have asked more people to help.

Saturday afternoon i spent most of the day running from pawn shop to pawn shop and buying the food i needed and trying to find a size 15 wedding band for my son Mike. Finally mission was completed
for $100.00 that was my biggest expense of any one thing.

Dami's wedding band was given to me by a close friend here at work it was from her first wedding and she felt like she wanted to bless them.
It really blessed my heart maybe because i have been divorced before if you can somehow redeem something good out of what seems like a failure in your life.
Linda has a precious and wonderful caring heart!

My husbands friend Bill took the pictureswiht a professional 35 mm camera
i hope they turn out good our wedding pics were not to great but I'm sure they will be good !

Mike and Dami were married on a sunday afternoon. The wedding was beautiful !
i was so worn out i had been called in twice the saturday night before they were married. the verse that says " I can do all things through christ who strengthens me ! has such meaning ..... i was able to pull together a VERY NICE wedding with God's help and Favor ! His grace is sufficient !

Shoestring Weddings, these are the best, mine was very simple also and it's been 20 years. What a heart warming story, and what a kind, loving, giving mother/mother-in-law you are! Such a blessing to your son and his wife. God watches over His Word to perform it, and he has a plan for each life. Your son rests in the hollow of His Almighty Hand. He is equal to the task of finishing what He has begun and is equal to healing hurts that may seem irrepairable. His faithfulness - just as your faithfulness to your son and his bride - is loving and kind beyond imagining. I pray that your son be accosted by the Holy Spirit in such a way that his thirst for the Word and desire to live for the Lord is irresistable, and that He bless you with a heaping does of TLC, just as you have blessed them.

Thanks for sharing that amazing story. I can see God's hand in so many of the details, like blessing you with bargains at the dollar store. I love it.
I pray that your son will come around and I am happy that he married a believer. You have some great friends that stepped up with their support. What a great testimony to God's love. Take Care and Congratulations! You are an awesome mother in law, Dami is a lucky young woman.

Some of the best wedding and receptions that I have attended were ones where not a lot of money was spent. Good Luck to your son and his bride.
