During the Summer You will Find me...

In my garden! I have had a vegetable garden every year since I first moved out on my own! I didn't get to have one for the past 2 years because we thought we were going to move and wanted to keep the yard in grass. When I was a little girl I remember spending long hot beautiful summer days with my grandma and grandpa in their gardens. The smells are wonderful. I was about 5 years old when I ate cabbage for the first time. My grandpa cut the head straight from the garden. He took a bite then got his salt shaker (he carried it in his pocket when we went to the garden) he shook some salt on it and gave the head to me to take a bite! "But grandpa" I said- "don't we need to wash it?" "Nah" he said "-it's just a little dirt and it won't hurt cha!" "But what about bugs?" I asked. "Well," he said in his long slow drawl-and his little laugh (I can still hear to this day!) "those bugs don't eat much!" and then he said "those bugs won't hurt cha!" That was the best cabbage I have ever eaten! And I believe that to this day! A little dirt and bugs won't hurt cha! It does a body, mind, heart and soul some good! People are weird these days. Afraid of everything. Get out side. Take your kids outside. Find your inner child! Lay on your back and make pictures out of the clouds, watch the ants on a ant hill, listen to the birds talking to each other, make wishes on the dandelion plumes then blow them away, pick the wild Mulberries and raspberries you see on the side of a road. Eat them right then and there! Blow the dang dust off and enjoy the carefree joys of life. Get messy! It doesn't cost a thing and it will give everlasting memories-that mean more than all the money in the world. I love you grandpa, grandma. I miss you. You live on... through me! -thanks for this wonderful gift of gardening!
Note: I burn more calories in my gardens then anywhere else!
