This is a true story of a bag lady named Jen, forty years old on the streets for twenty years. Jen did not take anything for granted and as she told me every day she was blessed. How I met Jen was when I was younger I worked in NYC for the Coliation for the Homeless. It was a wonderful experience in my life and I thank God for showing me this...I would like to share with you how God moves in such unforseen ways in a persons life such as Jen.
Jen ran away from home when she was twenty, leaving a two year olf little girl and husband. She felt they were better off without her, as she could not adjust to her life as it was. She headed for NYC praying that God would protect her and guide her. These two blessings were given to Jen and every step she took was taken with Gods Blessings....
She slept in boxes, doorways, train station, and pushed a grocery cart with her belongs which were few.....she would collect bottles and cans turning them in for money for food.
I met Jen one day as I went to get lunch...accidently running into her cart as she was coming out of an alley....she had a birthday hat on and a streamer.
I excused myself, and wished her a happy birthday. She showed me a pocket book she got as a gift with change in it. She had been going through garbage looking for food. I saw her, though I didn't say anything.
She smelled awful as alot of them do. Not having the money to go and shower.
We chatted for awhile and I asked her if she would like to come and see where I worked. She said, "yes".
Off we went...visiting work she was given clean clothes, food to eat, and money.
Promising she would go shower at the homeless shelter.
A birthday gift from us to her.
The next day she came back....walked into the room and said, "look at the new me." We all gave her a hug, and she looked so beautiful.......
As we told her we were here to help her. These people cannot for the most part be changed, as their minds do not function well.
This is there way of life, the one they know.
She found a penny and said, "I am blessed today."
She would walk by the grocery store and the man would come out with fruit for her. She would say to him, "I am blessed today."
The Coliation tried looking for her family, but with so little information from Jen were not able to locate them.
In Jens mind her daughter was still two years old, the last memory she has of her.
It is amazing how God works in peoples lives.....
One day I packed a picnic lunch and Jen and I went to the beach. We talked for hours enjoy the ocean and time together. She shared her lunch with the seagulls that were flying all around.....she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, my name is Jen Rugggby, I live in Ohio...again a different last name and state.
The next day when I returned to work, I told them this. They started searching and found her family....her daughter now grown up said, "my mom, are you sure?" We said, "yes." "I am on my way."
Gods plans are not our plans...he knows the time and place.
Re united Mom and daughter, as this is a happy ending.
Jens husband had passed away, leaving her a letter...
With God All Things Are Possible.....
take care, God Bless,
hugs, love, Paula
