No A/C at the Gym!

Since Monday the AC has been kaput at the Y... a very big and very expensive part is on order but I don't know when it will be fixed. Thank goodness that we are in Ohio and having the coldest July on record AND that at least the AC in the "gym" (basketball court area) is working. They are keeping the doors open to let the gym try to cool off the rest of the building... it's not working very well! BUT, nothing we can do about it except make sure we drink lots of water and also take it kind of easy in classes.
Wednesday I taught my double step class at 5:30 pm. It was hot, but not totally unbearable, at least to me. But I guess it's a lot hotter than I thought because at one point I looked down at my watch/HRM and it said 180! WTH??? I didn't think that the battery was dying because I just changed it and when the battery starts to go out on the HRM the HR does these erratic jumps up over 200 and then down to what my HR really is... this time around it was just steady the whole time - a nice steady 180 something! Then I looked again and it was 193! OMG!
Well, we took it a little easier than normal, not going full out, and took frequent water breaks to stand in front of the gym doors and let the cool air hit us. When all was said and done the HRM had me at 58 minutes with an avg. of 170, a peak of 198 and a total of 886 calories!
Last night I taught Strength & Tone. We kept the lights down low and I did things like calf raises, triceps & biceps, side leg lifts on the ground, and all kinds of ab work. No lunges, a few squats, all in trying to keep the hr's down. Still at the end of 55 minutes I had 400 calories burned - wow!
Then this morning I taught Spinning/Cycling. I watched that HRM get up and stay in the 160's & 170's. I forgot to turn off the watch at the end of class so it clocked me for 1 hour & 19 minutes while I cleaned up the room and then went to talk to Don, one of the Personal Trainers, and he showed me a new exercise. So those stats are peak HR of 188, average 142, 934 total calories. YIKES!
And this new exercise is kind of cool - I'll have to get my dd to take a video of it... I'll see if I can describe it - Don calls it the "Mountain Climber" because he does rock climbing, among other things, and basically you cannot bring your knees forward, you have to go to the side because you are up against a cliff! So take a very wide legged plank/pushup position with the knees off the ground and in your hands have 2 dumbells being held like handles. Bend the leg to the side and bring the knee up then back keeping the hips as still as possible, go down for a pushup, then pull up one arm with the hips still in line, shoulders in line, all parallel to the floor and bring the weight up to your shoulder... repeat other side and that's one rep.
He had me do 3 or 4 of those and I'll be throwing that at the class tomorrow morning!
