#29: Life Isn't Always Serious
Tuesday, July 28, 2009
This may be a surprise to some people but life CAN be fun. It, and we, do not need to be serious all of the time. Consequently, we do not need to take ourselves too seriously all of the time.
But we like to deceive ourselves into thinking that those who joke and seem not to have a care in the world are somehow less than we are because they are not serious. Therefore, they are not as valuable as we are. Don't they know how difficult life can be? Why are they are laughing and giggling and finding humor in strange things? Why aren't they more serious?
Not too long ago the grocery store where I shop changed to a different plastic bag to be used as a covering for umbrellas when it rains so water isn't dripped onto the floor. I walked in one day, saw the new bags and burst out laughing. The nearest bagger, a young guy I had often talked with, gave me the strangest look. When he was free I motioned him over.
"You know I shop here a lot, don't you?" I asked him. "Sure, you're in here all the time," he replied. "Well," I told him, "I don't want you to get into trouble with the manager but these plastic bags aren't wet. Do you have a spray bottle you can fill with water? If you do, I'll help you spray them."
He then gave me an even stranger look until he read what I pointed to. On the bags were imprinted the words, "Wet Umbrella Bag."
When I joked about how dry they were and that they were not actually "wet" bags, he finally got it and began laughing, too. That's when the cashier gave both of us a strange look.
There is no denying that life is often extremely difficult, that life is often very frustrating and irritating and depressing. There is no denying that life is often very -- serious.
And, there is no denying that very often we, too, must take our endeavors seriously.
But sometimes, as we go through our days, perhaps for our mental health and to shake off the burdens of everyday living, we need to allow ourselves the enjoyment of a "wet umbrella bag" moment and, at least for a while, forget our troubles and how just how serious a place the world and life can be.
