It's not exercise anymore

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

On Saturday I biked 60 miles. On Sunday it was 34. Yesterday 20. Today 21. And as I hit mile 15 today, I realized this is not exercise anymore, it's just me.

If you've read my earlier blog entries, you know that I started this journey just about 18 months ago. That's when I hit my highest weight ever, and my blood pressure was too high. So I took out the elliptical, hung the clothes that had been on it in the closet, and used it until it warmed up enough to start biking. And I was hooked. And pretty soon the clothes that had been on the elliptical didn't fit any more.

Winter was hard. I gained some weight back, but I was still ahead. And I kept exercising==thanks to my Sparkpeople friends, like Niknakpattymac who kept our virtual biking team moving across Australia (and got me to sign up for a live bike tour that will take place in August) and shares so much of herself as she supports others on this journey, and 2wheeler who can run 14 miles and is training for a marathon and who works so hard at getting in shape that after training-her friends don't recognize her, and happy-destiny who blogs here nearly every day, reminding me that it's not size, it's generosity of spirit that counts. And Rckwhitney, and jhollnagel, and ldcecil and so many more.

And they got me through the winter. And spring came and I was biking when it was in the 30s. And today, in a cool breeze I just biked for the joy of it. It's not exercise, and I smiled as I pondered whether it counts if it feels so good.

So thanks Niknakpattymac, and 2wheeler, and Happy-Destiny, and so many more. Thanks Sparkpeople.

You are right it is no longer exercise it is the joy of just riding and the many challenges that come with riding on different routes. When I do not get a chance to ride it feels like a peice of me is missing. Keep it up and I look forward to this winter for our virtual tour again.

This is great! You're so right. Riding isn't exercise; it's therapy for the body and spirit. Last weekend, we rode our MS150. I rode with great friends and it was so much fun.

The ride helped me make decisions about working. (July's contract got extended through August.) After the contract, I will take a break and get back to my friends -- my Spark Friends. I've added 6 pounds since February with the travelling. I look forward to taking that weight off and getting back on my bike!

    Congratulations!

(The old sappy Patty is all welled up with tears,as usual. sniff!) We had a wonderful time last winter--I cannot say enough good things about our little team. I'm so happy you joined and that I'm going to meet you for real, soon. Welcome, welcome, to the world of just loving The Ride. You've traveled far in just 18 months. Isn't it great to reach the point where exercise isn't work; it's fun. It's like going back to childhood--all that running and skipping and jumping and no one ever complained about "exercise." We were just being kids.

Have a great time on your bike trip.
