Little Things Make A BIG Difference

Thursday, September 10, 2009

I gained 40 pounds, but it took me 5 years to do it.

Whether it's my age, lack of exercise, etc., doesn't matter. What matters are the numbers.

40 pounds in 5 years means 8 pounds per year. 8 pounds, at 3500 calories a pound, means an extra 28,000 calories in each year. Divide that by 365 days, and it means I've overshot my calorie allotment by

EATING ONE EXTRA MEDIUM APPLE PER DAY than what my body requires has resulted in 40 EXTRA POUNDS!

This is amazing, don't you think?

So here's my conclusion -- it wasn't the fast food, fried food, ice cream & chips, it was that daily extra apple that did me in!!

    Hey there TG,

This is a great post - but then that's what I expect from you!! and it is a great reminder that doing the little things does count in the long run. 80 calories a day - I'll bet not a lot of people really stopped to think that one through!

Well you keep it up cuz I intend to drop that 2 in my middle digit on the Monday weigh-in!! and this time it will be forever. I suspect the 6 will disappear from your middle digit FOREVER as well.

    Make it a GREAT WEEK-END!!

I am making a life change with my eating habits. SparkPeople make it much easier do to the food and exercise tracking. That sure makes me aware of what I am doing. Now I do cardio every day for an hour at the gym and resistant training 3 times a week. I get a kick out of the nutrition ads, such as Jenny Craig. I know that it is not costing me as much as the food is sooo much better.

So that's what Mom meant when she said "an apple a day." Amazing numbers. Great post.

You are funny TG!! Yes indeed... it does not take much to go over our daily caloric needs. I will keep that in mind. Thanks for your email. I will answer you shortly. I just finished a Leslie Sansone workout and wanted to get my minutes into my fitness tracker right away... It is not always easy exercising after work but sometimes (like today!) I cannot do my walks during the day because I have too many meetings. It is really quiet on Sparks when Vandal is away. I love the drama in his blogs... "darkside" and all!! I sort of miss it... but don't tell him.. it might go to his head!!! emoticon

See, all of our problems started with that darn apple!! Thanks for giving us all something to think about.

The sad part, I was not an avid apple eater!! emoticon Mine was 36# in 3 years.

I made that calculation also at one point when I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now -- and it had taken me 7 years at 10 pounds a year to put on the excess weight -- and I figured like you that it was only about 80-100 extra calories per day. NOT gross "overeating" but how much self-loathing we heap upon ourselves!

SOOOOOOO much harder to take it off, and to keep it off!!
