What the MRI looks like.

Friday, September 11, 2009

Although I am not a doctor, radiologist, PT or anything like that, this is what I can tell about the MRI that I had yesterday. There is something wrong with me. My left and right hips (right is the bad one) don't look the same. There are a lot of white spots around the left one - some are pretty large. Someone here on Spark told me once that white indicated fluid or edema. So, there is some kind of fluid accumulated around the right one, mainly in the front. There are also some pics taken from the bottom up - as if you were looking straight at me from my feet that show definite differences in the position of the two hips - the right one seems to be farther away/higher up than the left one.

Anyway, I go to the doc again on Tuesday. On Monday I am going to call the radiologist to find out if my MRI has been read (doubtful they will tell me anything, but maybe they will?). In the mean time, I will replace my runs with bike rides. Although they still hurt, they hurt much less than runs do. Actually the aggrivate my plantar fasciitis more than running!

So, what does that mean to me as far as my running life? It's on hiatus right now. However, I am still signed up for the Columbus marathon. But, I am going to take it like a grown up, and put my big girl panties on, and deal with whatever the doctor says. I want to run and exercise forever. If that means I have to stop for now, than I have to stop for now. I would rather have a surgery/ pt/ break from running now that is temporary than wait until I need a new hip and have to stop completely. There's always the Pig in May next year. Who knows, maybe a rest is just what my body needs to get my pace back down where it was...

    Hi Molly,

I read this study about runner's health and how the only reason people do get physical problems more than non-runners is when people run through injuries and refuse to stop! I know how hard it is to accept whatever the outcome and having to wait patiently, but kudos to you for doing it!
Anyways, keep us posted- my fingers are crossed!

Molly, I love the attitude. And, of course, you are absolutely right.

All I can tell you is that when my hips got back into the proper alignment, it made a world of difference in my running.

I hope you obtain the same effect as I did. I look forward to hearing what the doctor says.

M-you have the right perspective. It's always heartbreaking when you plan to run something and then get sidelined by injuries. I agree about doing what you need so that you can heal and then have a full running life again. You know i was off the road for quite a while, took the time off that i needed (it was torture, every day not to run), and am back running now..still dealing with little things here and there, but learning how to manage it.

Races are going to be there when your body is ready. I love the "big girl panties", cracked me up!

Please keep blogging to keep me updated on what the doctor says is wrong. I'm crossing my fingers that it's minor.

You've got the right attitude - you've got your whole life to run. You MAY (or may not, we'll see) have to sit this one out, but there will be plenty of races in your future!!
