Torn labrum

Thursday, September 17, 2009

That's the verdict from the MRI. However, the tear is small - less than 1 cm. I have not been told that I cannot run, but I have been cautioned that long distances might not be my best choice. So, I am going to see where I'm at by next Saturday, my next scheduled 20 mile run. If I cannot complete it, then I will switch to the half (notice I did not say "drop down" to the half - A half marathon is not a step DOWN, IMHO.

I don't really have a definite plan for treatment of this tear, though. Stretching, Ice and ibuprofen is what I have been told.

The doc said to call again after the race if I feel like it's gotten worse (or I guess beforehand if it gets worse). But the ibuprofen seems to work OK and it's actually not that bad once I warm up (which takes like 5 miles, LOL.)

I know cartilage tears take a very. long. time. to heal because there isn't much blood flow to the cartilage but I'm hoping the small size of mine will make it heal quicker!

In the mean time, I ran 4.8 yesterday, and 6.7 today. Todays was scheduled for 7-9 miles, but one of my roads was closed due to a terrible car accident, and the cops wouldn't let me go that way. My deviation was a little hillier, so I cut my run a little short. I hope the people in the accident were OK - the news said that they were stuck in the car.

So there it is. That's what I'm dealing with right now.

    Molly,

I'm glad you know what you're dealing with- makes me wonder about my hamstring... but I hope it keeps holding up & that the pain is manageable- nothing wrong with running the half!

Good luck! I hope you feel better soon. being hurt is never fun! A half marathon is still a great goal if you can't do the marathon. I'm happy that you didn't just gave up and still are sticking to your fitness goals!

Well I'm glad at least you know what you're dealing with now!! Has your doctor worked with other runners with this injury before? Will massage (even self-massage) possibly increase the blood flow and improve the healing time? Or is PT an option so they can hook you up to that stem machine that zaps you and gets the blood flowing (at least I THINK that's the point of that machine!)? I'm glad you can still run with the help of ibuprofen and that you still realize how big a deal running that half is (so many people could never fathom running one, nevermind injured!). Take care!!
