#180 -- Post Holiday Letdown or New Opportunity?

Saturday, December 26, 2009

The hype and commercialism is over. So is the official Christmas. Now the post holiday letdown sets in for many people.

But not for others. Why is that?

Why are some people filled with an apparent abundance of goodwill toward others throughout the year while some people resume their natural state grumpiness?

Is it that difficult to be happy? Or to be nice to people all of the time? Remember the feeling of wanting to reach out in greeting to so many friends and acquaintances in the days leading up to Christmas?

Why not continue that into the new year?

Write thank you notes during the year for positive service to those who serve you -- the cleaners, trash collectors, grocery store employees, gas station attendants, friends, family...

You get the idea.

A letter of praise for a job well done to a supervisor means more to the receiving employee than you might realize. It needn't be long or elaborate. Simply a thank you for a pleasant demeanor or a helpful attitude. Especially if someone has gone out their way for you.

You would appreciate receiving such a nice card or letter, wouldn't you?

Well, so will others.

Be the first to smile at someone. Hold a door open for the person behind you. Say thank you to everyone who helps you. Write the cards and letters.

You'll carry the spirit of Christmas with you and spread joy to your universe of contacts. Cast your bread of thankfulness on the waters of friendship.

Isn't it worth a try?

    LOVED YOUR BLOG LOU:)

I THINK OF DOING NOTES OR CALLING A SUPERVISOR, BUT I DON'T ACT ON THE THOUGHTS...I CAN DO BETTER:) THANKS FOR THIS REMINDER. IT'S TOUGHER OUT THERE THESE DAYS AND IT WOULD LIFT EVERYONE TO JUST BE CONSIDERATE...

This was something my Mom instilled in me and we have kept in practice and I continue to do so after her passing. My husband, Relocated Cowboy and I do this throughout the year. Sometimes something as simple as a little hand written note brings a big smile to another. I think way too often people take one another for granted and those little shared moments bring much good to one's soul.

I'm hoping everyone who read your blog passes this on through their own actions and others follow their lead.

    Thanks again.

My husband lives this everyday. Now, he doesn't write cards, but he always holds doors open for people, addresses waiters and waitresses by name then tells their bosses what a great job they did (if they did, of course). Just yesterday, he helped a family in our church move since he had been asked too, despite feeling a migraine coming on. I always try and be as nice. Yes, he's a keeper, not perfect, of course, but a keeper for sure. A real example of a gentleman for our sons. I'll keep trying in 2010 to be as considerate of others as he is.

    Lou,

Thanks for this blog. I've often said that I will work harder for appreciation than for money. Everyone needs an "atta girl" or "atta boy" now and then.

I ask this same question all year? If it's so easy to be nice for 30 days, why not be that way 365? emoticon

    A Smile
    Author: Unknown

The day began with dismal doubt,
A stubborn thing to put to rout,
But all my worries flew away
When someone smiled at me today

Your smile is a gift you can give to others. May we carry the spirit of Chirstmas (love) with us everyday, everywhere we go. Joy emoticon

This is not only worth a try but a great idea for both the giver and the receiver! How nice the world would be if people would just TRY this. It truly does make one feel so good to help someone else for no reason other than to just HELP them and make them feel better.
Lou, you have already done something good for US by reminding is to do this very thing. Thank you!

Yay! I left a pint of hot chocolate mix in my mailbox for the mailman! He brings my packages all the way down our private road, all the way to my door! My neighbor, who loans me eggs and flour all the time when I forget them in my recipes, came over to borrow sugar on Christmas Eve! Yay for good neighbors and good mailmen! Happy day, Lou! emoticon
