#189: I Won't Give In To A Cold

Monday, January 04, 2010

Excuses for overeating and not exercising are plentiful. But having a cold will not be one of mine.

Please believe me when I say I sympathize with all of you suffering through winter's freezing temperatures. But here in Central FL it has been in the 30s for the lows the past few days. When that happens, restaurants and businesses set their building's thermostats at 85. That's how it was in the lobby of the doctor's office today while the inner waiting room was like a meat locker.

It's no wonder a cold bug finally caught up with me. It's been years since I've had headaches, chills, hot flashes, queasy stomach, coughing, sneezing and the overall blah feeling.

But I won't give in to a cold. It won't beat me!

Today the doctor started me on a medicine called Byetta to stabilize blood sugars that some have asked about. This also contributes to weight loss. She also took me off another medication that she said contributes to weight gain.

Since my first dose of this new medication was this afternoon, I took the opportunity of a new beginning to have chicken noodle soup and a salad for dinner that brought me 171 calories under my daily maximum and forced myself to do 18 minutes on the treadmill (I aimed for 20 but the legs turned to jelly) that burned another 140 calories. All in all a good new beginning, physically and mentally.

No, a lousy cold won't keep me from the progress I know I will now be making. I am determined to stay on this new path to weight loss.

A cold? Bah, humbug. Down but not out.

Lou this is such good news! Not the cold of course but the meds. I pray for you and was praying that the doctor would find some real help! And your determination is ADMIRABLE. Yes, I remember from my folks living in FL that even in the 40s your state's people are not equipped to handle it. Here it is a way of life.
And I am so very proud that you got on the treadmill! Just give your body time to heal too. Can't wait to hear progress reports! In the meantime...
    You ROCK, sir!

Praying for you through this cold. Suggestion: if you have RiteAid near you, pick up PharmAssure brand Echinacea and Goldenseal. If you don't have
RiteAid, then you could buy Nature Made. I take 3 at a time every few hours until I start to feel better, then go down to 2, then one when I know I am almost well. It's not a supplement to take every day--just when you are sick or feel something coming on. Many blessings to you, Lou.

*achoo* Okay, okay, I'll go to the pool tomorrow despite the cold, already! lol Actually, if I have fever, I won't. We're going down to 20 tonight and tomorrow night, MOST unusual for us. It's flatout ugly outside. Not sure I want to be outside in that at 6:45 in the morning. I don't want a cold to win but I also don't want to get more sick. I love the sound of determination in your voice, young fella!! Go GET 'em!!!

P.S. I was on Byetta for a season. Since pulling off some weight and adding exercise to my world, I'm off of that and the Metformin I had been prescribed. So far I'm holding my own with blood sugar and I hope to never have to take the meds again!

Let me know how you make out on the byetta. Did you take it in the stomach or leg?

    Good luck!
