What the heck happened over the holidays and looking forward to 2010!!

So! I did it! My goal was to not gain one pound over the holidays, and I did it! My other goal was not to fuss and worry about every bite that went in my mouth, and I did that too! This is such great news; I have lost 75 pounds in two years and kept it off. 50 of those pounds came off last year. I learned a couple things over the holidays about myself that may be worth sharing.

I am a SUCKER for desserts. I can't even be in the same room with them without having a bite or a piece. Something I learned in Weight Watchers many years ago kept me honest. Don't let a bite turn into a sliver that turns into a slice that turns into a slab! Hahahahahaha! It is so true. And if I go for the slab, it had better be the most amazing piece of dessert that was every found on the face of the earth! Typically that dessert is not as good as it looks. There are NOT a lot of fantabulous bakers out there, myself included. So usually a bite is going to be enough. Something else to keep in mind when people bring around big platters of "surprise and thank you for all your hard work" cookies after the holidays. They are usually old, leftovers, and starting to be on the stale side. Not worth it! emoticon

There has to be some way to stop the chocolate binging at the holidays. The most amazing boxes of chocolate start showing up for Christmas. Oh my gosh, I love, love, love chocolate like this. I can avoid it all year, no chocolate for me, not a problem. But over the holidays when these gorgeous boxes start showing up, I have problems staying out of them. This is a work in progress. More weight retention was here than anywhere else. I did find these great cinnamon suckers that I love. Maybe I need to keep those close by as a go-to alternative. It is a puzzle to be solved! emoticon

Walking, walking, walking, walking. Every single day without fail, I got out there and made the rounds. I found every way I could to make sure I got in my walk of an hour a day. The potluck starts at 11:30? I'll be there at noon. We are eating at 3:00? I'm taking Dewey the Dog out for an hour now. I have class tonight and a lunch event at noon? I'm parking the car 30 minutes away from work and walking in. Get home all tired and ready to relax, look at those big brown Dewey eyes? I'm going out for 15 minutes for THE WALK! I just kept at it and really believe that has to be the magic of not gaining any weight this season. So for all you New Year's resolution folks wondering what to do for exercise? WALK! Just break it up 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there. It really, really, really works.

So, what am I looking forward in the next few months? I will be at my half-way point to my weight loss goal. I will have lost 80 pounds soon. This will be the year that I will have lost 100 pounds. Just stay tuned. 75 pounds lost is amazing, and there are bigger and better things to happen in 2010. I can't wait!

    Congratulations on your weight loss success. I love your encouragement to just WALK. I have a friend who lost a lot of weight just walking for 30 min. every morning. I lost all of my pregnancy weight after my first 3 pregnancies by just walking. I tried 30-day Shred when I first joined Sparkpeople and then I started doing Turbo Jam (which I still do), but since our Westie team started the 5,000 step challenge, I have been trying to walk every day and I think that that will be the breakthrough for me. Consistency and doing something enjoyable and easy - walking!

    I, too, love chocolate and have a very difficult time staying away from it. Being in the same room with it is almost surely an equation for disaster. If I really want to stay away from it, I have to try to keep it out of the house. Sometimes I'll drink hot chocolate or sugar-free French vanilla coffee to help my sweet cravings.

    Anyway, keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing all about your future accomplishments. emoticon

    Sounds like you did very well this holiday season. You have learned to stop binging which can be problematic as one goes for all or none and that leads to disaster. emoticon

    Good going over the holidays with not gaining weight. I agree that exercise is a big factor. I yet have to learn how to control sweets. Fortunately hardly anyone gives me any anymore. But once I get started I have a very difficult time stopping. I ate sooo much cheesecake on Thanksgiving I made myself sick. But it was soooo good! Good advice on the cookies received after Christmas. Who needs someone elses leftovers.

    Your weight loss is Fantastic! I gained about 10 pounds over the holidays. I'm going to have to try some of your ideas. I'm a real sucker for sweets too, plus I didn't get the exercise in. So far this year I'm being much more consistent with it.

    Congratulations! You had a major victory this year! Especially keeping it off over the Holidays. Walking does really help, in more ways then just the calories burned. I find myself more focused and calmer when I walk. Keep making the best decision possible each time!

    You so inspire me. Love this blog and really love the ZEN MASTAH. Though he may need to move more and Zen less. lol

    I would love to walk and so would my dogs. Right now I walk my big dog with my car. Yes, you heard right and it works, but I do hope once I get a significant amount of weight off that I will be able to walk with out the knee pain I now experience. I have so far lost 30 pounds, 10 in the last week with the stomach flu. Still not eating up to par yet, so I cannot exercise yet. I am walking like 5 mins but I am exhusted with even just that much. I know this will end soon, as each day I am able to eat a bit more.

    I too struggle with sweets, pastries and well anything sweet. I have a total sweet tooth. With the help of SP, I have given up candy by using the goal tracking thing. Next will need to be donuts. I have not had one in over a week, but only cuz I have been so sick. I think about them all the time.

    Good to hear that you have a plan and I cannot wait to see the new you at the end of the year 2010.

    Love those goals!!!! That is really what we need to do for ourselves. In fact....I have not met my goal for today, and decided NOT to the gym....too cold out to go...so hey, how about Leslie! I only need 30 more minutes. So you have inspired me.

    I LOVE what you said about keeping OFF that weight. THAT is my BIGGEST goal, to keep it off for good. NO MORE regaining weight. At my age, can't afford it anyway!
    Interesting learning about desserts....especially when that is STRESSED spelled BACKWARDS!!! EEEEKKKK. Keeping honest with oneself IS a good one for sure. How often we have eaten in "secret" only to have our secret come out in WEIGHT GAIN, then everyone KNOWS what we did....the pits.
    Still it IS hard to not let that sliver NOT turn into a slab. TRUE....be sure it is WORTH it if you DO indulge...
    Funny how many times at work someone brings in goodies, and I take one, bite it chew it and spit it out....because it doesn't taste fabulous enough to WASTE time calories on it!!!! You are on the money with that one!

    You are RIGHT about the chocolate for Christmas...but you know, I will have a piece , but it HAS to be a FAVORITE. Then only a piece! Hey we can't restrict ourselves forever....but we CAN eat like a thin person! They don't go for the whole thing!

    I think you are learning how to navigate the "eating season". Somehow we do learn we can have what we want (and need at times) but we have to be careful. I think our mindset is different and that's how we manage to not gain. Yes, we may have more desserts than normal, but we watch ourselves more carefully.

    Hurrah for learning to live healthy without deprivation!!
