6 more LOOOONNNNNGGGG weeks...

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

OK, so I had a post-op doctors appointment on Monday. I have bee running slowly for about 2 weeks in anticipation of the doc telling me that I will be cleared to run on Jan. 25. Well, that's not how it went down. He told me no running for 6 more weeks! So, that means no Flying Pig marathon for me. I have been doing great at physical therapy - they were all shocked when I told them I couldn't run for 6 more weeks. But, I do get to decrease my PT times to one visit a week, plus home exercises daily.

I am just so disappointed I want to die. I was so ready to get back into hard training; and the runs I was doing were getting faster and faster. I guess I'll go back to walking/bike/elliptical (which I HATE) for 6 more weeks. My new goal is to run the half, because I know there's no way I'll be ready to run the full marathon 7 weeks after I start training. But I have already done a 7.33 mile run, so I think I could manage a half.

Very sad and depressed right now about this.

After sitting out last year with an injury from a 5 mile race in cold icy conditions I did take it very slow to return and have added on swimming, biking and now cross country skiing. I look at all of these things as something to do to stay in shape and give me enough of non-running days so I can run on the other days. I have signed up for the 1/2 at the flying pig. If you are in Cincinnati do you have any recommendations of where to stay. Suzy

Oh, I'm so sorry. I assume he didn't see the growth he was expecting. Everyone's different and healing is tricky but you want to be doing this 'til you're 80. So take it easy and try not to watch the calendar too much.

Why do you have to wait another 6 weeks? Are you still in pain?
I am out of commission myself and I am almost considering to call the Dr and see what to do, so can get an idea about when I can run again.... I thought you were doing so good.....
I think, the biggest thing is to accept this and be okay with it... that way, you can focus on what you can do... BELIEVE ME, it's so flipping hard.... but, I'm sure you can do it!
I think embracing cross training is anyways great for long-term running, because it decreases injury risk!!!
    Good luck Molly!

I'm sorry you are still sidelined and I find it amazing that you've been able to run over 7 miles already! But it's best to play it safe so that you are certain to be able to run for many, many years and not injure yourself trying to go to soon.

I know it's hard but try and be patient and before you know it those 6 weeks will be gone!

I'm so sorry you got such unexpected and crappy news!! Is there some other sort of challenge you can set for yourself while waiting for these 6 weeks to go by? Maybe join a spinning class or something different? It's got to be so tough on you and I hope you're able to keep yourself busy!!
