A wonderful run on the snow packed streets!

Thursday, February 11, 2010

So I have been having this pathetic pity party the past few days and I was the only one in attendance. I have been a blob of nothingness since the weekend cuz I knew that running outside was going to have to wait since the snow fairy visited our area AGAIN.

After the inability to stomach yet another treadmill run I decided that I was no longer going to listen to myself and I went running on the snow packed streets. It was absolutely wonderful and I loved the soft surface which is far different from the concrete pavement I usually run on.

Slowly, I am becoming a running fool in ANY type of weather condition and it happened like this. First came the base layers, the wicking socks, the balaclava and after today's run I now have yaktrax on order. Get this, I even allowed my shoes to get...dirty. There is something that happens to a person that is evolving into a runner. They quit coming up with excuses why you shouldn't run and start saying why not???!!! I love that!

Today's run looked like this:

Mile 1: 11:30
Mile 2: 11:51
Mile 3: 12:12
Mile 4: 12:06
Mile 5 (0.68 mile): 8:59

Total: 4.68 miles
56 minutes
12:06 av pace
453 calories

I LOVE my Garmin!

Oh, someone is going to be having a lot of fun with her new running toys! Way to get out there! I am impressed with "winter runners"... it was 48 and windy here this AM and I was NOT happy!

Thanks for the comment on my blog; before you know it, we'll be posting the same mileage!

You go Girl! Just yesterday I was out running....errands in my toasty warm car dressed like the abominable snow person, feeling totally sorry for myself to having to "brave the elements" when I saw a runner go by (they are all over our neighborhood!) wearing pants that I swore needed paint remover to get off. Her cheeks were red and you could see her breath, but she looked so determined and strong. I instantly felt like such a wimp!! No excuses, love it! What the heck is a yaktrax? emoticon

I've been avoiding outside runs lately too, especially with the snow. I consider myself a fair weather runner, but I also get bored with the treadmill, so perhaps I'll layer up and try a run in the snow... if you survived it, I think I can too! emoticon

WOW! What an inspiration YOU are lady!! I do consider myself a runner but the super chilly wheather & icy streets turn me into a WIMP!! As I look out my window at the sun causing the snow to sparkle; I was thinkin' "go for it deej; you know how you dread that treadmill" :) me thinks me may just do that!!

Thanks my sister runnin' fool!! :) you've SPARKED me yet again!

Way to go! How awesome that you just went out and did it?! Since I am not the most balanced and graceful to begin with, I'm doing the tm thing, all the while in awe of all of you who are out running in the snow. Sounds like you had a good time, too...

Awesome! The first time I got my running shoes dirty, I was a little annoyed, but then I realized it gave them character ;) Now I don't mind getting a little snow and muck on them if it's in the name of having an awesome outdoor run!

    Enjoy the YakTrax!

Good for you! I can't get myself to run on snow because I slipped all over the place last winter. I've got much better shoes this year, but I'm still a little worried about hurting myself (I fell off a dry sidewalk, for crying out loud!) Can't wait for your review of yaktrax - might be just what I need!

    Hardcore.

Sounds to me like what I ran on in Fargo. They had a thin layer of very packed snow on the roads, like they leave it there all the time because the pavement surface won't stand up to all the plowing otherwise or something. It was very nice to run on. Solid footing but softer than pounding frozen pavement.

I'm intrigued to hear your report on the yak trax. Haven't gone there yet myself. I don't mind snow, but sloppy footing is not my favorite.

Awesome! And don't you feel even more like an athlete since your shoes are dirty now? :) I ran recently in the snow and the first slush puddle I stepped in, I got a bit angry because my shoes were brand new, but by the 2nd slush puddle.... I was a runner with worn in shoes! Woo-hoo!

Did you also get to run by people out shoveling their drives wearing huge, heavy coats, gloves, hats, scarves.... while you wore nothing but a lightweight shirt? I really enjoyed that aspect of my run too. :)

I am so jealous. I feel like a complete blob. We went to the sledding hill instead. I am going to the gym for a class in the morning to get over this blah.
