#231: A Confession: I Like Doing Chores

Monday, February 15, 2010

Yes, it's out in the open. I enjoy doing chores. Like laundry (I know how and when to use fabric softener), ironing (with spray starch), changing the bed linens, all of it.

Why? Am I a demented soul? Well, maybe. But the secret is what I wrote about yesterday -- going with the flow of life and becoming one with the essence of the universe.

No, this isn't some abstract New Age thing. I have simply learned to take every task and enjoy it.

Laundry was done this afternoon and after a nice dinner with a friend I began the ironing, taking joy in seeing the wrinkles disappear and how nice the shirts looked afterward.

In the background is an oldies music station playing Elvis, Bobby Rydell, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and other golden oldie artists I grew up with. After all these years listening to such music I'm not surprised I know the words and melodies to all of the songs. But, it's fun chore music.

In a few minutes I'll change the sheets and blanket and pillow cases, appreciating the upcoming feel of fresh bedding when I finally call it a night.

I know some guys think doing these things or washing dishes or cleaning house isn't macho, but you know what? Their opinion doesn't matter to me. Let them be slobs or rely on the "little woman" to fetch and clean for them.

I am not too proud to take out the garbage or clean up after a pet accident. Neither do I mind mopping floors or cleaning a bathroom.

Because I immerse myself in the moment and enjoy what I do when I do it.

It's easy to complain and moan but I believe it takes a man secure in his masculinity to take on what many still consider "women's chores."

The secret for me? Simply doing what has to be done, enjoying doing it and appreciating the results.

Of course, Brenda Lee in the background helps.

Present moment happiness. Try it. You may like it.

I love your positive attitude! I must admit that I don't feel that great about cleaning up other people's messes or pet accidents, but I do like cleaning up after myself and cleaning out storage areas and closets. Keep smiling emoticon

    Okay...confession time.

I dance when I clean. Put my headphones on, and listen to some rocking Christian music and dance and sing and clean!

It seems to get done faster too.

By the way....I LOVE the smell of fresh sheets on the bed.

I have a confession to make. I love to cook ,but I dislike housework . I would hire a maid if I had the money, so I could spend more time with my Art, Music and Writing. There is just not enough hours in the day to do all I want to do. I didn't mind housework when I was raising a family ,but I want to retire from it and spend my day in creativity. L emoticon emoticon LOL

Lou, since I am single women living without a Man , I have to do the things the ladies expect their husbands to do and I don't mind it either....maybe because most my life I didn't have to do it. ??? When a light bulb goes out I am the one who has to climb the ladder and fix it, carry out the garbage every week. I installed a bathroom cabinet by myself, put bookcases together, change the lock on the doors etc. I have to do it all and I feel as much of a Women as ever. Sometimes we have to be all , do all- that's life! Joy

If we could all approach every task before us with such an attitude, we wouldn't have such difficulty with the "work" of it. Thanks for putting the positive spin on this.

The Bible also gives us encouragement in this regard.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward." Colossians 3:23-24

OH, LOU! You are so RIGHT!! My sweet husband cooks, cans, cleans, and does the cat litter... I could go on!! It takes a REAL MAN to know it's "ok" to do domesticated things! I appreciate it so much, though, and don't think twice when he needs some help digging, working in the garden, or anything I can handle!

    I enjoyed your blog! emoticon

emoticon Good for you, Lou! I totally understand. I also love the chores you mentioned so who says only a female can like these things? Ironing was always my favorite. I earned money in high school ironing for my mother an aunt (allowance) and I loved every minute of it. As you said, you get such satisfaction seeing the wrinkles smooth out before your very eyes!

I, on the other hand, don't enjoy cooking...so it is nice that some liek cooking and others of us enjoy the wonderful feeling that cleaning things gives us.

And, maybe it has only been since I have aged but I don't care either! I am the way I am and if someone doesn't like it they can go the other way and not look.

I think you are awesome in your likes and dislikes and speaking out about them!

    You ROCK, Lou!
    Hugs,
    Gaye

I am going to try your positive outlook... I think the problem is that I resent doing it... I work all day, come home and clean up so I can make dinner then clean up again. No one in my house seems to mind sitting and watching me do it either... I have not trained my children well enough... emoticon
