#231: A Confession: I Like Doing Chores
Monday, February 15, 2010
Yes, it's out in the open. I enjoy doing chores. Like laundry (I know how and when to use fabric softener), ironing (with spray starch), changing the bed linens, all of it.
Why? Am I a demented soul? Well, maybe. But the secret is what I wrote about yesterday -- going with the flow of life and becoming one with the essence of the universe.
No, this isn't some abstract New Age thing. I have simply learned to take every task and enjoy it.
Laundry was done this afternoon and after a nice dinner with a friend I began the ironing, taking joy in seeing the wrinkles disappear and how nice the shirts looked afterward.
In the background is an oldies music station playing Elvis, Bobby Rydell, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and other golden oldie artists I grew up with. After all these years listening to such music I'm not surprised I know the words and melodies to all of the songs. But, it's fun chore music.
In a few minutes I'll change the sheets and blanket and pillow cases, appreciating the upcoming feel of fresh bedding when I finally call it a night.
I know some guys think doing these things or washing dishes or cleaning house isn't macho, but you know what? Their opinion doesn't matter to me. Let them be slobs or rely on the "little woman" to fetch and clean for them.
I am not too proud to take out the garbage or clean up after a pet accident. Neither do I mind mopping floors or cleaning a bathroom.
Because I immerse myself in the moment and enjoy what I do when I do it.
It's easy to complain and moan but I believe it takes a man secure in his masculinity to take on what many still consider "women's chores."
The secret for me? Simply doing what has to be done, enjoying doing it and appreciating the results.
Of course, Brenda Lee in the background helps.
Present moment happiness. Try it. You may like it.
