limited mobility is for the birds

Thursday, February 25, 2010

I have a newfound appreciation for people who cope with limited mobility every day of their lives.

Last Friday, my doctor diagnosed me with hip bursitis. It's too complicated to explain the condition here but it basically causes pain in the hip, thigh and groin. She gave me some samples and a script for prescription lotion and told me to rest my hip, ice it and take Tylenol for the pain. She said it should go away but it can take time. She didn't say how much time though.

It's now nearly a week later and although the pain in my hip and outer thigh have eased, the pain has concentrated itself in the right groin. How lovely! My DH was kind enough to dig up the pair of kids' crutches we got from a friend. Max height for the crutches is 5'2." I'm 5'3" w/o shoes so I tried them out and they're OK but the natural swingy motion of using crutches aggravates my right leg, which defeats the whole purpose of crutches. This morning, I discovered that I can manage fairly comfortably w/ just one crutch around the house. The next test will be to take it outside in the snow and ice when I pick up my daughter from school today.

I know my doc didn't say anything about applying heat to the injured area but I've been sleeping w/ a heating pad for a couple days and it makes it feel better in the mornings. I'm using the heating pad right now and elevating my leg. It can't be all that bad since my hubby and my Dad, who is an MD, suggested it.

It will be interesting to see how things go this weekend b/c DH will be out of town snowmobiling while I drive Madi to her all-day Brownie activities in nearby Portage on Saturday. I just have to take her. It's an ice skating event and she's been begging to try ice skating for ages. Of course, I can't don skates but I can cheer her on from the stands w/ my one crutch. Then there's dinner and an awards ceremony that night at Chuck E. Cheese.

Sunday morning is Sunday School. And then we have Amber and Mike's baby shower in the afternoon. So my crutch and sore leg will be getting a workout this weekend like it or not.

Having spent way too much time on crutches (managed to break both legs at different times), I know how frustrating it is. Here's some lemonade...it takes more energy to swing your body around on crutches than just walking...at least it feels that way. Hope things are improving quickly for you.

Limited mobility definitely sucks, I hope that you feel better soon. It definitely sounds like you're going to be tested in the upcoming days, I hope none of the activity aggravates the bursitis worse.
