#257: Are You a Positive Thinker?

When faced with adversity, do you try to find the positives in the situation? Or do you allow yourself to drown in the misery of the moment?

When you practice positive mental thinking, the positives have a way of jumping to the forefront of your observations, regardless of the circumstances. The mind of a person who possesses PMA -- Positive Mental Attitude -- always finds a way to overcome problems.

Fill your mind with reinforcing wisdom from books and tapes such as "The Power of Positive Thinking," "Acres of Diamonds," "The Magic of Believing," and "Think and Grow Rich."

Repeat daily positive affirmations reminding yourself that you are a worthy person, someone who is deserving of success. When a failure hits, automatically think of ways of overcoming the situation.

That is PMA thinking.

You can achieve IF you believe you can.

You can overcome problems IF you believe you can.

Here's an exercise to help develop a positive mental image:

Write yourself a letter and tell yourself in the letter all of the positive attributes you possess. Are you caring and compassionate? Maybe you're a skilled mechanic or cook. Or good at sports or writing or music. What are your individual, specific positives?

Then, ask a close friend to write a similar letter about you. It will be reinforcing to read what special skills and abilities that dear friend believes you possess.

Practice having a positive mental outlook and soon it will become second nature.

Above all, always believe in yourself. Always!

    I have a pretty positive mental outlook. Things do seem to take care of themselves sometimes. I have a lot of faith in God and He will see me through the good times and the bad times. It seems in the bad times is when we really learn to rely on Him and it's emoticon to watch how He works things out for our good.

    Thanks for the positive, motivating blog! I have found that with age that I have been trying harder to be more positive about life. It is sometimes difficult for me because I am sometimes so over-critical of myself. I am going to have to try the activity you suggested because maybe I will see more of my positive attributes and not be so hard on myself.

    I do try to keep a positive attitude at all times...I usually see the glass "half FULL" but for the occasions I may get down about something it usually only lasts a few minutes because I realize the only one I hurt is ME by being that way. Good reminder, Lou.

    Positive Mental Attitude is the way I try to live my life

    ... however, when something does jump up and hit me between the eyes, I have a little stamp &rant, I "F and blind" for a while, kick a punchbag &thump the water at gym (they can't fight back) -- then I breathe deeply again and think about the baby steps needed to get out of the situation.

    The biggest contribution to my PMA is the complete absence of a "Poor Little Me" belief or feeling out of control of myself. I control my feelings - once I have vented - and I choose Joy &happiness

    Thank you BIG TIME! I have been weighing how badly my latest choice in jobs is going to be... hours don't jive with partner, lousy wage, location-- poor and on and on. I don't even want to be trained on Monday.

    BUT at least it is a job. (Out of work since last June) and it will be some $$ coming in, I won't be underground like a miner, endangering my life like a firefighter, it won't give me cancer like aluminum smelting....

    I HAVE to start thinking more positively! My stomach is churning and I can't sleep.
    You reminded me and I'm thankful!
