Finding and celebrating the joy in life

A long time ago I realized that happiness is not something that some people have, and others don't like blue eyes or long legs. Happiness is something that comes from within, can't be bought, can't be coming from others. And in order to make anyone else happy, you have to feel it on the inside first. There are ways to cheat a bit..... something happens that really crushes you... allow yourself a bit of time to grief, feel bad, make some tea. But then, realize that life is gonna go on, and you have a choice whether to chew around on the past, or move on and find beauty in other things. I know it takes some practice, but it does work. I find joy in music, nature, little things like my dogs wagging tails, my girls coming out of bed looking all shaggy, my husband burping "Excuse me" at the table. To me, every day is worth celebrating. Sometimes, yes, you have to start digging with your nails literally to find things that make you smile, but they are there. Ever so small, and once you see them, you'll be surprised to find that they have been all around you all this time, and you didn't see them, because you kept your head down for so long.
